Ghost poem perfect imperfect

A series of lessons slotted into the topic of school for introducing and practising using the perfect and imperfect tenses in German. The poem is a fantastic activity that works like magic when you translate between the perfect and imperfect - suddenly it rhymes! (will be clear when you see it) The .ppt contains help with vocabulary, and the other .ppt is a lesson which links in with the Edexcel textbook text on Kalib/Angola.

Comprehensive worksheet on the topic of health, focusing on practising and producing the verb structure 'second-final' (i.e. future, conditional and modal verbs + infinitive). Because we all like to talk about what we WILL/WOULD/COULD/SHOULD do!! Great for GCSE classes. Clearly demonstrated using 'sentence-builders', which can also be used for revision, or to create longer pieces of writing.

Developing speaking in German: Shrink me, grow me!

A way of modeling and encouraging extended answers. Model a lengthy sentence, and students must take turns to remove one element but leave the sentence 'intact' (i.e. still sensical) until they get down to the most basic structure. Then it's their turn to build up again from a basic structure, element by element. Some students will want to race ahead and put in 5 things at once - this is ok if they can do it correctly; if not, encourage them to go step by step. The example here is on the topic of environment/Umwelt.

A couple of help sheets and activities on the topic of the environment which revise the use of three different tenses. Based on Echo 3 Rot K4E4 Umweltschutz (pp.66-67). Included are: - helpsheet of sentence builders on present tense (ich-form); - helpsheet of sentence builders in three tenses, plus hints on how to use and extend them (NB the same verbs are used in all three tenses) (all in wir-form); - set of sentences to translate into German (differentiation is in the 'level' on which students attempt the task - details on sheet. I devised this for my year 9 beginners' class. They found it tricky - I think the challenge would be there for learners who have more years of German behind them.

A lesson to teach/revise structures with the conditional perfect. Ideal for a small class, each member of the class becomes an investigator of one particular structure, and then in a mini-carousel, students explain their findings to each other and write notes on the summary sheet. If there is an odd number (as in my class), you can use the slot with the student to do some specific oral work or other challenging activity. Extension activity on reverse is on the future perfect. Very challenging - not for the faint-hearted!

2 lessons: in lesson 1, students learn 9 different shops. This lesson is full of AfL as the students set their own targets for learning these phrases during the lesson. In lesson 2, students use these phrases in sentences to describe what you buy where. Again, lots of practice and AfL techniques with a thumbs-up/down quiz to finish. Great for year 8.
