Fully differentiated Catalysts lesson

Fully differentiated Catalysts lesson

(15)
Use the presentation and the lesson plan as an overview. 3 different worksheets (best printed as booklets) for different groups (struggling scientists are the lower ability groups). Lesson starts off with the most fabulous colour changing catalytic reaction showing that catalysts do not change or get used up in the reaction. I found it best to print these in small booklet form.

Puzzle for Force, Mass & Acceleration Calculations

(6)
Simple calculations and conversion for the re-inforcement of the Forces topic. Written for AQA Oxbox lesson 2 (P2.2.2) but is generic. Students will require a calculator and a pair of scissors to cut the puzzle out. Answers are provided. This puzzle uses the free teaching software, formulator tarsia, which can be safely downloaded from http://www.mmlsoft.com/index.php/home/free-software

Yr 7 Solar System Planets Takeaway-style lesson

This activity is in the style of a takeaway menu and caters for all students from level 3 -8. Students are given the Information Sheet and Takeaway Menu. They then choose any starter, main and dessert to complete independently. cressida-bowden takes credit for the solar system cards http://www.tes.co.uk/ResourceDetail.aspx?storyCode=6073029 and the takeaway menu format credit to @teachertoolkit

Three activities to help with Potential Difference and Voltage. The Suduko puzzle really gets them thinking so I always have them work in pairs.
Thermal Transfer Bookmarks for keywords

Thermal Transfer Bookmarks for keywords

(2)
A very handy way getting students used to the terminology of the topic. Keywords and definitions provided. If correctly placed in the exercise book students can have access to it without flipping backwards through their books to find it. This is a double sided bookmark to be glued in on any page on the far left hand side of the left hand page - instructions for the best way of using these are on page 3 of the document.
Velocity and Speed SOLO Lesson

Velocity and Speed SOLO Lesson

(2)
Students decide which SOLO level they are at and choose a partner of similar level. They then complete the activity set for that level and continue with the tasks of a higher level. Set up 2 workstations, one with the equipment for practical - trundle wheel, tape and stopclock, and another with the hexagons activity.

Forces Yr 7 Less.3 - Upthrust & Density

(2)
Ready to go lesson. Practical investigation on calculating volume, density and drawing conclusions. Worksheet based on an old exploring science investigation. Follow weblink for Lesson 4. L3 – I can say whether upthrust is a push or pull force L4 I can say what density is L5 - I can describe upthrust L6 – I can explain why some objects float and others sink using the concept of density.

Forces Yr 7 Less.4 - Balanced & Unbalanced forces

(33)
Ready to go lesson. There is no practical in this lesson. Differentiated by outcome. L3 – I can understand simple force diagrams and say which way the object will move. L4 – I can correctly draw a force diagram and say whether the force is balanced or unbalanced. L5 – I can work out the resultant force on an object and draw force diagrams. L6 – I can work out the resultant forces of complex forces working on an object.

Worksheet to help those struggling with this topic to gain merit. Helps them to describe how lenses can affect rays of light. A similar one for mirrors can be found here http://www.tes.co.uk/teaching-resource/Concave-and-amp-Convex-Mirrors-BTEC-low-abiltiy-6-3-6427471/requestAction/add/ - answers to be uploaded shortly.
Friction and Forces Lesson based on #takeaway

Friction and Forces Lesson based on #takeaway

(7)
This is based on the VERY successful #takeaway format where students can choose their activity from a fully differentiated choice. They need to choose a starter, main and desert but they can chop and change as they choose eg. they can choose an easy starter, harder main and medium difficulty desert. Ideally this should take them about 45 minutes to complete. Students will need access to textbooks or the internet. I give them the Exploring Science Text but any will be fine.

Lesson 2 can be found here http://www.tes.co.uk/teaching-resource/Forces-Yr-7-Less-2-Friction-6347935/ The first lesson of this SoW, follow the link for lesson 2. Designed to encourage students to work with peers and consists of 3 similar, but differentiated activities and is great for a mixed ability or setted groups. The lesson plan is detailed enough to give all the information you need. I usually use this as a the introduction to year 7 Forces.
Forces Yr 7 Less.2 - Friction

Forces Yr 7 Less.2 - Friction

(2)
Lesson 2 in this SoW. Follow weblink for lesson 3. Ready-to-go lesson. The investigation is very simple and looks at how mass affects the force. L3 – I can name some forces L4 – I can take accurate measurements and know the range of my measurements L5 – I can correctly calculate the mean and draw a bar chart L6 - I can use my bar chart to help me draw a conclusion L7 – I can explain why friction is is considered a force. (it changes speed of object or works in opposite direction of applied force)
