An Introduction to Using Statistics Mode on a Calculator

An Introduction to Using Statistics Mode on a Calculator

(2)
A worksheet to be used when introducing statistics mode on a calculator in GCSE/AS statistics lessons. Data entry and manipulation instructions are given for finding the mean from a list of quantities and the mean from a frequency table. Three models of calculator (two Casio and one Sharp) are discussed; other models will have slightly different methods of entering and manipulating data. Calculator manuals are usually too brief and manufacturers sometimes have different methods of entering and manipulating data for calculators in their range. A class of pupils often has a variety of calculator makes and models. This can make it very confusing for pupils who are meeting statistics mode for the first time. "An Introduction to Using Statistics Mode on a Calculator" (pdf and ppt versions on 7 pages/slides) is FREE to download. It contains examples showing the working by hand and some questions for pupils to attempt using their calculator. I found that using this worksheet allowed me more time to help pupils who were having problems with their calculator. Once pupils had grappled successfully with data entry and manipulation they usually felt much happier with statistics mode and were more confident about trying other statistical functions.
