Understanding Beethoven - New Spec Edexcel

(1)
This is for the new Edexcel GCSE. The Learning Objective behind this resource is all about understanding the structure of the Piano Sonata but also learning about the key terms linked to the piece. This lesson will get students thinking on their feet in groups and by the end of the lesson they will not only no where to find key terms but should also be able to explain their role in the structure. This resource will need to be printed and then cut up into strips. I then gave all of the words to 4 groups and got them to lay them out on the floor in order of where they are found in the symphony. Once laid out they were then asked to discuss if they needed or wanted to add more words. The next stage is to then sort the words into the Elements - I use DR T SMITH and they then discussed how some of the elements are less represented in this piece than others. Extra Mile Listening Challenge

Do you want to get your students listening to more music in a structured way? Well this listening challenge will take them through 21 pieces of music from various genres and styles. They will be asked to listen to a different piece everyday and then comment on that piece. The best way to use this recourse is to photocopy it into a booklet format so that students keep the work all together. It could be used from Year 9 up, but maybe have the most and best impact at GCSE and A Level. You could create a Spotify playlist or an Apple Music playlist, but students are possibly able to find the music themselves fairly easily.

If you want to get your students listening to instruments and identifying key features then this is just the resource for you. They will be required to find pieces, listen to them and then respond to questions for each piece. This will get them listening to a find variety of instruments and genres of music. The resource is best used as a printed booklet and students should be encouraged to complete this over 10 days - an instrument per day. Once this is completed they could then create their own challenge using different instruments.

Takeaway Homework for GCSE

I am sure you have heard of this approach to homework so I thought I would post the one I have created in the hope that it might be of use to you. It is a great way of getting students to choose homework tasks for themselves, but could also be used in a cover lesson. You may want to use this and then create your own or adapt it for different classes.

This is a two sided document that contains a task linked to Film Music and the Set Work - Star Wars. It is a listening and investigative task that will help them to explore film music and key terminology linked to film music. There are extension tasks and advice for students who need that extra bit of differentiated help.

This two sided sheet focuses on Key Signatures and Major/Minor. I find it really useful for teaching Year 10 at the start of the GCSE course, but it is also great for revision.

This is a complete Unit of Work that you could use with Key Stage 3 or ideally GCSE. It goes through various techniques and suggests a plan for lessons. It is laid out in an easy to read format without too much over the top language etc. The aim behind this was to make it accessible to students who may like to just follow this through for themselves.
