A selection of evaluation sheets I have used regularly with classes across key stages 2-5. I have found these have prompted students to respond in different ways and allowed for creativity in responses as it not only relies on written responses or individual work but gets feedback from peers. The life cycle analysis will get students to consider the environmental impact of their product at every stage of its production, use or even end of life. I have also used to good success with SEND classes.

The first of a set of PowerPoints I have produced to cover the GCSE content for Product Design. It sets out the content to be covered over the two years, the style of learning (TEEP cycle) and some simple introduction activities to get students thinking and engaged.

The second batch. An adaption of the platinum pudding to make smaller serving in cups. Lesson plan gives options for the recipe depending on your time frame. From using pre-prepared parts or making the full recipe to make the dessert ready for the jubilee celebrations.

PowerPoint 13 in the set for GCSE Product Design, introducing polymers. Activities, exam questions and discussion points. Useful to have material samples to help alongside this. Covers the two types of plastics, their uses, environmental concerns with plastic use and a practical to strengthen working skill and understanding of material use.

Topic 7 in the GCSE set of PowerPoints. Covering simple mechanisms including levers, types of motions and gears. a good introduction to the topic with questions and a project to create a mechanical toy set to strengthen and develop learning.

Topic 4 in the GCSE course. Lots more PowerPoints being prepared and uploaded. This one covers energy generation (fossil fuels, nuclear and renewables) Exam questions, discussion and notes to take with diagrams.

Topic 20 Polymers A project based around polymers for students to further their understanding of this material area. I have mainly used this with acrylic in schools and is suitable for using up scrap plastic if you have leftovers from a laser cutter perhaps. Follows the design process and has opportunity for student independence throughout. Would work with or without access to a laser cutter

Topic 26 is about prototyping. Suitable for preparing students for the NEA Contextual Challenge as well as increasing their understanding of the design development process. Comparing cardboard modeling vs 3d printing and activities to strengthen learning.

Mini design challenge that has been run with key stage 4 groups many times (and a few adult lessons) to encourage creative thinking and problem solving. Design brief given with opportunities to explore and think outside of the box before using craft materials to prototype and present ideas to a group for feedback. Can easily be run as a competition and does not need specialist equipment so could easily be suitable for use outside of a specialist classroom or even work from home project.

2nd lesson of the GCSE course I am uploading. A design challenge to really engage students from the outset of the course. A creative solution is needed with the opportunity for students to explore prototyping their ideas as well as working on clear design communication. Topic 6 of the GCSE Product Design Course. I use this alongside the amplifier kits available on kitronik (details in the ppt) but it could easily be adapted for other kits or electronics projects. develops good soldering technique and introduces components and how programmable circuits can be included in prototypes and product designs. videos, discussion points and questions included in the PowerPoint.

Topic 5 in the GCSE PowerPoints. Covering materials. Smart materials, composites, modern materials and material scientists. Ive included videos from Youtube, activities in design using new materials, discussion points and exam questions.

A project to develop understanding of branding, aesthetics and packaging design. Using Modelling techniques with blue styrofoam to prototype their designs students will design and then produce an example prototype with packaging that can be evaluated by their peers. Students will also have the opportunity to explore and expand their knowledge of processes including blow moulding of bottles, paper and board types and their use in packaging. this project will run for about 10-15 hours and would be suitable for use in a non-specialist classroom if you are happy to use styrofoam outside of the workshop (warning not to use around carpet as the blue dust is tricky to vacuum up).

Topic 19 is a second look at timbers with more detail and hands on approach from the students. following a creative design brief allowing students to explore the design process further (great opportunity to build skills prior to the NEA) and to gain further workshop experience.

Topic 16 of the GCSE PowerPoint Collection Covering ecological and social issues that student’s should develop an understanding of. Activities and discussion points to support learning throughout along with videos and images to bring the topics alive with real-life examples.

Topic 15 of the GCSE Product DEsign course. Exploring the consequences and areas that designers must consider when selecting and using materials in designs and product manufacture. Includes relevant video, discussion points, and activities to spark learning and practice/develop the skills in following the case study of Aluminium production and the creation of a learning resource.
