Students map the location of tropical rainforests around the world

These resources don’t include a picture of a potato being used to demonstrate contour lines . However there are details of how to do this in the map skills scheme of work . Drawing lines on the potato to represent contours and then drawing a bird’s eye view of the concentric circles from above help the students to visualise the transition from 3 D to 2D .

Start with the concept of what a symbol is , then follow up with the activity where students identify the symbols . They can write the answers into the handbook. There is a video of this activity happening in a French Geog lesson in the resource in the pedagogy section of my shop. It is a video from Chenderit school. The cards for the card sort and bingo symbols cards are within the powerpoint . So they can be printed off.

This lesson followed the unit on quarry ridge settlement design. The aim was to look at biodiversity within an urban setting and garden design. It was part of a national competition in its first year but I repeated the task in subsequent years as the students loved it. It also fitted into the school site as we designed a wildlife friendly garden in the school site at the same time in honour of a retiring head teacher Mrs Westbook. Students develop mapwork skills of designing in plan view , on a grid where there is a scale . The students developed detailed colour coded keys which also helped with map drawing skills . I had a whole series of laminated cards with pictures of environmentally friendly artefacts such as insect hotels, bee houses, hedgehog houses, bird and bat boxes etc .

This lesson involves setting up the classroom with products which involve purchasing choices . For example washing up liquid which is environmentally friendly and that which is not. Different types of Tuna , line caught and others, fair trade chocolate , organic chocolate , supermarket basic brand . There is a form in the student handbook which can be used . Students go around the product and note the price (see page 84 of the student handbook) Students add up the prices of a fair trade , environmentally friendly products and those that are neither.They are given a budget and decide which products to buy There are powerpoints about fair trade to explain how it works. Students then justify the choices of product that they have decided to buy. There is an example of student writing

Scale is difficult conceptually. That is why students start by drawing a bird’s eye view of a bedroom . They then use OS maps and look at who may use each scale of map .

This lesson uses statistics and authentic resources to determine the primary, secondary and tertiary industrial composition of Reunion island. Correct drawing of bar charts is a key skill that underpins this lesson.

This unit was part of a Year 8 year long course with lessons taught for an hour a week. It was the first unit of the year and followed on from the Tropical rainforest unit of Year 7 . This was a good follow on because the tropical rainforest unit contains links to climate and adapatation and so the students were familiar with some concepts and vocabulary . The unit consists of many interactive activities, video clips and two very motivating assessments , one where students produce a humourous leaflet about desert survival and the other where they design an imaginary desert animal to survive in a desert environment. Students are challenged by many thinking skills . There are exemplars of student work .

Students use the outline in the handbook and cut and stick the events that have occured throughout the history of the EU. They use the dates on the written bubbles and rectangles to work out where they go , then they get the gist of the events.

This unit was the second unit taught for one hour a week as part of a whole year course of geography in German in Year 7 . The first unit taught was mapwork. The rainforest unit build on the mapwork unit as it gradually build up more sentence construction . The first assessment on rainforest adapatation involves independent research skills, description and explanation but based on a A3 poster of rainforest structure . The second assessment is based on a group work activity to design a campaign to save orangutans . The French unit on tropical rainforests was more extensive and involved a trial followed by an essay on tropical rainforest deforestation. If you look at how these pieces of work are constructed it is possible to translate the materials used in the French CLIL to German if you wish to use the French materials for guidance . This unit on tropical rainforests was translated into German by Chris Scott and Maren Blume . The lesson plans to guide this unit are contained in the methodology booklet . There is a section in the second half of this booklet which describes how the unit is put together and how to teach it . The rainforest handbook is available here but sections from it which relate to each lesson are included to download . The handbook can be printed for students to annotate and use as a reference resource . This is the first of four to five lessons which explore characteristics of relationships. This lesson identifies types of relationships and then looks at whether they are positive or negative . These lessons were used by Year 8 students who were taught for an hour a week.

Lesson 2 uses the genre of soap opera to explore emotions seen in relationships. Lesson 3 follows on with a look at fidelity and infidelity and what makes people be faithful or unfaithful and what the impacts of infidelity are.

Students assess all types of fuel and weigh up their advantages and disadvantages. They use video clips and other resources , then put answers into a table .

Students review current political thoughts and make up their own party and produce a campaign on energy .

This is a lesson that simulates arrival on an island and choices of energy .

This identifies a range of situations where there is possible peer pressure and the dangers of them.

Peer pressure in realtion to alcohol

These lessons looks at drug use .The end of the unit assessment asks the students to write a story about a person and drug or alcohol abuse. There is exemplar work and writing frames to assist the students.

There is a large amount of preparation , to present arguments for and against drilling for ol in Alaska. there are video clips and personal statements. Then students prepare a radio broadcast in role.
