This lesson looks at the Tibetan Buddhist Prayer flags. It looks at their background, history, design, meaning and purpose. The students will learn all about the flags, before finishing the lesson by designing a flag of their own. This lesson looks at the issues surrounding quality of life and sanctity of life and get the students to debate, discuss and vote on life and death issues. -It starts with a classic balloon debate (which is both enjoyable and challenging) -It goes on to look at a real life case study of Diane Pretty -It continues with a deep discussion of four real life case studies -It concludes by looking at why human life is so sacred A highly recommended lesson that has always been rated as outstanding or excellent.

This lesson is most effective in year 7 or 8. Students are asked to write a letter to themselves to explain what they are like and what they want in the future. Then in year 11 (or 13) they open the letter and see how much they have changed and grown since the wrote the letter. A really fun and interesting lesson that shows how much the students grow while they are at school.

This lesson looks at how enslaved people used music to challenge the authority of their masters and send coded messages to others to help them to escape. The students will learn some of the code words and what they represented. It uses some of the most famous songs (such as ‘Swing low sweet chariot’ and ‘Amazing Grace’) and dissects the lyrics to understand the true meaning of the songs. It helps the students to appreciate how difficult it was to be enslaved and how the seemingly small acts of resistance could make a huge difference. An interesting and important lesson that deals with a sensitive topic carefully. The lesson ends with the students having the opportunity to write their own song of resistance.

This assembly looks at the problem of Fake News in today’s society and the role it has played in several major world events since 2016, up to the present day (including Brexit, Trump, Wikileaks, Climate change denial etc.) The assembly covers what fake news is, the history of fake news, where it comes from, how it spreads and why it matters. It also features a quiz where the students will get the chance to see if they can spot the fake news stories out of ten unlikely sounding stories. Finally the assembly links fake news to gossip and rumours and gives tips as to how to spot fake news (both online and in the classroom). This is a fun but comprehensive assembly.

This was a survey I created when completing my NPQSL. I made it from an amalgamation of serveal other surveys I had seen used at other schools. It proved to be a useful and a powerful tool. I used it to gather information about how we could improve our transition procedures, but it could easily be adapted to find out what the students think of their school. A fantastic aid to pupils voice in school.

This can be used as a stand alone lesson or as the introductory lesson in the Fantastic places SoW. It looks at the amazing India city of Hampi and launches an investigation as to why the city is surrounded by boulders. The students will investigate two ideas: Science and Religion and will need to explain why they believe one over the other. They will also be encouraged to create their own original explanation. A fun lesson with lots to do.

This lesson looks at the effects of the crusades. It briefly covers the context of the crusades (what they were, when they took place, why they took place) The lesson has a variety of activities and encourages the pupils to think of both positive and negative effects of the crusades on Christianity and Islam (in Europe and the Middle-East) An excellent lesson.

This is an outstanding lesson (this lesson has been praised by an LEA inspector, SLT, an AST and it has been highlighted in an Ofsted report). It uses a variety of different activities including a scavenger hunt, a diamond nine and teamwork. The lesson gets the pupils to investigate nine causes for WW1 (from Alliances to Sandwiches!) and the pupils need to find links between the causes and prioritise them. It is a fun lesson but also an informative and chanllenging lesson.

This lesson looks at the reasons why it was so hard to catch Jack the Ripper. It looks at eye witness statements and all the contraditions. The students then have to draw up a profile of what they think Jack the Ripper really looked like.

This lesson gets the students to investigate life in the Warsaw Ghetto in WW2 through a number of Primary and Secondary Sources. It tests the students source skills and also builds on their knowledge of the Holocaust and WW2. This is a really useful lesson if you want the students to work on their source analysis skills. It is both a powerful and a challenging lesson.
