This is a lesson using flame tests that I put together for Harry Potter day. Students need to work out who has poisoned Dumbledore. I used this with Y10 who had not done flame tests before.

A 2 page summary of the AQA (new specification) Organic Chemistry unit of work. Covers both trilogy and separate Chemistry content. Can be used for revision at the end of the topic, or as an introduction to a new unit of work. - Crude Oil and Hydrocarbons - Fractional Distillation - Alkanes - Alkenes - Cracking - Testing for Alkenes - Reactions of Alkenes - Addition Polymerisation - Condensation Polymerisation - Naturally Occurring Polymers

This gives a one sheet document that can be printed out and used by the class to complete the required practical. There is a sheet for both part 1 (disappearing cross) and part 2 (volume of gas). For part 1 I have included two options - the second slide is my preferred option and gives the students more guidance (this is the hand out that I used and it goes well along with the power point). Covers hypothesis, variables, the purpose of each step and conclusions. If you are only carrying out the disappearing cross practical then diagrams of the other possibilities are used in the plenary.

This contains a summary of all the information needed for the AQA Quantitative Chemistry unit for the new specification. It can be used for both Trilogy and separate Chemistry specifications. Information is condensed into two pages and includes the equations needed and worked examples. Can be used for revision at the end of the topic or as an introduction. - RAM - RFM - % composition - Conservation of mass - Moles - Concentration of solutions - Yield - Atom economy - Titration calcultions

The first slide should be printed and given to the class (one each). This gives them the instructions using all the HP names for the the potion 'ingredients'. The second slide gives the equipment needed for each station and the real world names of the 'ingredients'. I used this with low ability Y8 but could easily be used for any lower school class (or possibly primary?) as a fun intro to Science or end of term activity. I designed these to fit into an hour lesson, with 4 groups moving around 4 stations. Add/remove or modify activities depending on class age/size/ability. Please risk assess for you individual class and school.

A one page summary of the Rate and Extent of Chemical Change unit of the AQA new specification for Chemistry. This can be used for both Trilogy and separate Chemistry specifications. A good revision document for the end of the unit or could be used as an introduction. - Collision Theory - Factors affecting rate of reaction - Calculating rates of reaction - Reversible reactions - Equilibrium and Le Chatelier's principle - Required practical

2 options. Full lesson. Includes starter, method, diagrams to refer to during the practical and differentiated plenary questions. Suitable to use for AQA required practical. Print sheet and give one per student. Second option requires the students to say why they are carrying out each step in order to prepare them for the exam. Prompts are given to help scaffold or can be removed for higher ability groups.

Revision lesson covering the basics of fractional distillation, alkanes and alkenes and cracking. Brief teaching slides covering the basics along with multiple choice questions to identify any gaps in knowledge/understanding and exam questions. The lesson is split into 3 rough sections and could be split over a number of lessons if preferred.

Lesson for top set Y9 on Chemical catalysts. Includes reaction profiles and a look at the change in activation energy, the shape of the catalyst and evaluate command word exam question. 2 practicals are done in this lesson, but could be adapted to include just one, neither, or a practical of your choice. More info on the practicals I do is in the lesson.

Revision lesson on rates of reaction. Made for a middle ability Y11 class with a focus on practicals methods of measuring rate of reaction, writing a method and calculating rates. Does look at tangents and using a tangent to the curve to calculate a rate, but may need more for high ability students to stretch on this - exam questions could easily be added. Does not look at why changing conditions changes the rate of reaction and explaining this.

Revision of the topics mitosis and meiosis. Brief teaching slides covering both with diagrams, multiple choice questions to check understanding (I use mini white boards for this). Exam questions with answers for independent work and a 6 mark question. Indented as revision for a middle ability set.

Revision lesson aimed at a middle ability Y11 class with very little recall or hormones and hormonal control. Covers the main glands, their locations and what their role is as well as the control of blood sugar levels and diabetes. Some tasks are included to check understanding as you go. Exam questions could also be included as appropriate for your class. You will need a text book or other information source to support students with some tasks unless you expect them to have good recall of the topic.

Put together for AQA A Level Chemistry (new specification) on the hydrolysis of esters and its importance. Saponification, biodiesel, transesterification, hydrolysis in acidic and alkaline conditions. The practical here is making soap and detergent - method included.

Introduction to covalent bonding or revision lesson. This covers the very basics of covalent bonding, using molymods to allow the students to visualise the bonds and then getting them to draw the bonding. Designed for bottom set Y10 who loved it.

For the starter activity provide the class with some information about the elements. This can be tailored to your class, giving more or less information depending on ability (easily found on the web). Scavenger hunt activity about the scientists and their contribution to the development of the periodic table with a table to fill in. I have sanitised the information and cut down the amount of information that they need to read so that this can be completed in 10 minutes. AfL leading to a differentiated exam question. I had 3 sheets scaffolded to different levels. The scaffolding I provided is given on page 2 of the word document.

Introduction or revision of ionic bonding designed for a LA class. For the practical simply ask the students to see if any compounds you have available are soluble in water, conduct as solids and conduct when dissolved. Could also link to revision of electrolysis.

Put together for AQA A Level Chemistry (new specification). Recaps understanding of some key words, dot cross diagrams and understanding of basicity. Covers preparation of aliphatic and aromatic amines (including mechanisms) and properties as required.

Put together for AQA A Level Chemistry (new specification). Covers how the structure of benzene is determines and the reactions that occurs on the benzene ring (with mechanisms) including Friedel-Crafts acylation. Tasks throughout to test and encourage thought. A differentiated task to assess listening and understanding and a differentiated plenary.

A revision power point designed to be used for the final lesson before the paper 2 exam. Briefly covers the main points of collision theory and rates of reaction, fractional distillation, alkanes, alkenes, chromatography, gas tests, the Earth’s atmosphere, pollutants, drinking water and life cycle assessments. I have put this together with foundation students in mind but could easily be added to to cover the higher tier parts of the specification. I intent to print the slides out so that the students can annotate around them as I talk.

This lesson has lots of discussion and debate. Encourages students to think about the materials that we use and how important they are to ourselves and other groups of people. Looks at the limited materials we have an how long they may last. Data task on recycling aluminium. You will need to print the information on slide 9.
