Introduction to reflection and its uses. Includes often used practical work and mirror maze plenary taken from another free resource on TES (cannot take credit). Many others available so can be changed to suit your class.

Introduction or revision of ionic bonding designed for a LA class. For the practical simply ask the students to see if any compounds you have available are soluble in water, conduct as solids and conduct when dissolved. Could also link to revision of electrolysis.

This lesson goes through what a reaction is, what is happening to the atoms in molecules when they react, why equations need to be balanced and how to balance them. At the end I use a variety of equations to practice, choose any that a suitable for the level of your group (lots available already on TES).

Revision of the topics mitosis and meiosis. Brief teaching slides covering both with diagrams, multiple choice questions to check understanding (I use mini white boards for this). Exam questions with answers for independent work and a 6 mark question. Indented as revision for a middle ability set.

This is a lesson using flame tests that I put together for Harry Potter day. Students need to work out who has poisoned Dumbledore. I used this with Y10 who had not done flame tests before.

2 options. Full lesson. Includes starter, method, diagrams to refer to during the practical and differentiated plenary questions. Suitable to use for AQA required practical. Print sheet and give one per student. Second option requires the students to say why they are carrying out each step in order to prepare them for the exam. Prompts are given to help scaffold or can be removed for higher ability groups.

Revision lesson covering the basics of fractional distillation, alkanes and alkenes and cracking. Brief teaching slides covering the basics along with multiple choice questions to identify any gaps in knowledge/understanding and exam questions. The lesson is split into 3 rough sections and could be split over a number of lessons if preferred.

Lesson for top set Y9 on Chemical catalysts. Includes reaction profiles and a look at the change in activation energy, the shape of the catalyst and evaluate command word exam question. 2 practicals are done in this lesson, but could be adapted to include just one, neither, or a practical of your choice. More info on the practicals I do is in the lesson.

Revision lesson on rates of reaction. Made for a middle ability Y11 class with a focus on practicals methods of measuring rate of reaction, writing a method and calculating rates. Does look at tangents and using a tangent to the curve to calculate a rate, but may need more for high ability students to stretch on this - exam questions could easily be added. Does not look at why changing conditions changes the rate of reaction and explaining this.

Revision lesson aimed at a middle ability Y11 class with very little recall or hormones and hormonal control. Covers the main glands, their locations and what their role is as well as the control of blood sugar levels and diabetes. Some tasks are included to check understanding as you go. Exam questions could also be included as appropriate for your class. You will need a text book or other information source to support students with some tasks unless you expect them to have good recall of the topic.

This lesson has lots of discussion and debate. Encourages students to think about the materials that we use and how important they are to ourselves and other groups of people. Looks at the limited materials we have an how long they may last. Data task on recycling aluminium. You will need to print the information on slide 9.

Designed for the new (1-9) AQA specification. Covering reversible reactions, the energy changes associated with them and a practical. The practical sheet that goes along with this is designed to be used as a single sheet and encourages students to think about the practical in the same detail as is needed for the required practicals. The method is included along with space for their own notes and conclusions.

Designed for a low ability set with lots of SEN. Practical, sentence starters for discussion and literacy tasks. Links to diffusion is cells and why this is important.

Whole lesson covering how to calculate rates of reaction for the new AQA specification. Includes a recap of calculating mean and anomalous results. Calculating mean using numbers and graphs. Levelled task for students to pick tasks that suit their confidence level and an exam question included (this should be changed to suit the group).

I put this together as part of AQA A-Level revision for Y13. Summary of what metal-aqua ions are and they reactivity with NH3, NaOH and Na2CO3 (colour changes etc). I printed out the last slide and gave them a copy each for their notes.

Introduction to the topic of equilibrium and what it means in terms of rate of a reaction. Links to two videos which my class found helpful to visualise equilibrium. Levelled tasks including an exam question.

Designed for low ability set with lots of SEN students. Includes pictures and activities. Use pre-made slides of different tissues to compare. Literacy task, AfL.

Put together for KS3 (Y8). Starts with a quiz and then some AfL to assess current knowledge and allow for discussion of different energy needs/food intake and why. You will need some food labels for them to analyse in groups and compare to each others. Oracy and literacy task. And plenary to get them thinking about health vs energy.

Water purification (Potable Water) for AQA 1-9. Power point and practical sheet. Students test the pH of 3 types of water (any available will do), and then evaporate off to see if any solid is left behind. The worksheet gives a full method plus space for students to record results and answer questions on the method (preparing for exams).
