What it does?
This JS application takes in 4 bit binary values and changes the style of the box to reflect their corresponding colour in the pallete. Once completed the student can either save their design as a text file (see example) or a bitmap file.
How i use it
While covering the representing images this is a really nice way for students to demonstrate how a bitmap file stores an image.
This can be extended into compression getting students to group up the binary strings etc. 0000 0000 0000 0000 --> [4, 0000] etc.
What it does
This JS application is an infinite game generating a number between 0 and 255 and displaying it in binary. Users convert it in their heads in 30 seconds and enter the decimal value in the box.
How i use it
Conversion Champion! This becomes a consistent favourite with my groups as a plenary, i use it throughout the entire 2.6 unit with students keeping screenshots of their highest score. At the end of the unit person with the highest score in that group gets the conversion champion crown and a £5 voucher!

Sheets are password protected to prevent students altering the formula which marks their input.

What is Lateral Thinking?
Lateral thinking is a problem solving method which requires the people engaged to use indirect and creating approaches which may not be immediately obvious. As problem solving is vital skill for any future career i believe it is a skill set we should engage all students with.
How do you implement them?
Matchstick puzzles are incredibly versatile and easy to implement. You can implement this sort of task in the classroom in many different ways. A personal favorite of mine is to have a few sets of laminated paper matchsticks on each table and let them interact with the puzzles.
What subject are these tasks good for?
Well, these can be implemented into any subject as starters or settler tasks, the problem solving skills are universally transferable in my oppinion; myself i teach ICT and Computer Science.

A good point, This is only Part 1, I am working on a second part which, when complete, will be linked above. I have around a hundred of these puzzles in books but i am going through them with a fine tooth comb. I am looking to implement puzzles puzzles which fit into two categories:
