Fact sheets about the planets in our solar system, the Sun and our Moon. A5 fact sheets (once A4 folded back to back) for a Reading Corner, Topic Board, Writing Corner, Science Resources – or alternatively used as A4 posters. A lot of useful information! Each fact sheet includes information about the planet, its size, distance from the Sun, how many hours in a day, how many days in a year, temperature on the surface, number of moons, when and who first recorded it. A great whole class teaching activity or group activity – children use labels and pictures to sort minibeasts into insect or not insect, and match key features while cooperatively making decisions and discussing the different possibilities. Includes instructions, posters (text) to introduce Minibeasts, minibeasts pictures, group and features labels, recording worksheets and posters to check answers. The PowerPoint briefly describes the history of the Christmas tree and the differences between modern day Christmas trees. Part 1: describes the origins of the Christmas tree from Pagan celebrations to German traditions and why it became a worldwide custom since Victorian times. It shows some famous Christmas trees used for public display around the world. Part 2: describes present day production, sales and impact on the environment of Christmas trees, including real and artificial trees. Children are asked to make comparisons and to briefly describe which tree is better for appearance, cost, convenience, transportation, longevity, disposal, allergies and safety. It ends with reviewing how Christmas trees affect our environments and what people can do better to save them. The PowerPoint provides questions and answers to check the children’s understanding. A Bingo game that will encourage a lot of discussions as you play :) Can be used as a way to assess children’s knowledge. There are 2 different boards, each with matching sets of pictures of dinosaurs with names; group names (carnivore, herbivore); and descriptions. Playing: Children attempt to match each picture with a dinosaur; match additional sets of cards, wherever it is a carnivore or herbivore; and then guess the dinosaurs when reading the description cards. Children can check their answers - answer sheet for each bingo board included. I have created fact sheets and worksheets based and adapted from DT unit 2C Winding. It also links History Unit 1‘‘How are our toys different from those in the past?’ Some activities can be linked to Literacy (Reading and Writing, Non-Fiction, Story Telling). The unit can be adapted for a particular class topic. Planning included! . Through this unit, children learn about the concept of winding mechanisms, building on previous knowledge of wheels and axles. They learn about different mechanical toys and how they have changed over time. They explore how to make winding mechanisms using construction kits, then, after discussion, make their own toy using a winding mechanism out of reclaimed materials. Resources • Fact Sheet: Wind-Up Toys – What is a wind-up toy? • Fact Sheet: Wind-Up Toys – A History of Wind-Up Toys • Diagram: How to make a wind-up mechanism • Making a glossary of new vocabulary • Story writing: Write a short paragraph that links to the story History worksheets: • Draw a picture of each toy (from the past and modern) and label (similarities and differences) • Put pictures in the correct order (cut and paste) to show how wind-up toys have changed over time DT worksheets: • Draw a win-up toy and label the different parts of the mechanism • Designing (part 1): illustrate idea and label different parts to show how it will work • Designing (part 2): list materials, equipment and plan stages of making • Description: Using stages of making as a reference, write a description (word list) • Evaluation: evaluate own wind-up toy and make suggestions for improvement Useful Tip!
