An introductory PowerPoint that introduces students to Mackellar's poem 'My Country'. This was created for use within a concept focused Unit of Work (Images of Australia) designed for students in Stage 4, or Year 8. A copy of Mackellar's poem 'My Country' is needed to complete the poetic devices activity at the end. Lesson duration: approximately half an hour. Students are expected to already know the following poetic devices: - Personification - Contrast and/or Juxtaposition - Metaphor

Designed for and used with a lower ability Year 10 class as an introductory activity to the unit of work 'Advertising'. Contains spelling and comprehension activities as well as a basic print advertisement for students to analyse.

Novel study with a focus toward extended writing and essay response. Originally used with a year 8 class (students aged approximately 12-13 years of age). Themes of the text are more suited to adolescent girls. Designed for use in a points based unit of work in which students have the choice of which activity to complete. Activities range from 5 points in value to 20 points. Includes .docx and .pdf versions of student worksheets as well as completed teacher worksheets with answers.

This took an entire one hour lesson with a very good year twelve class. I gave each student an A3 copy of the poem and they copied the annotations from this PowerPoint. The PowerPoint is complete with animations and highlighted text. All annotations highlight techniques and have brief explanations. There are many annotations and students will not be able to fit them handwritten on a regular A4 page. It is highly recommended that if you are going to have students copy these that an A3 page is much more practical. I hope this saves you the three (possibly four - I'd rather not know!) hours that it took for me to make it :)

This PowerPoint grew organically as the text was taught for the first time. The lessons are quite structured and routine as this was taught to a mixed ability class of varying abilities and also a number of behaviour issues. The lessons focus on literary techniques such as symbolism, tone, metaphor, etc. and quotes for essay writing. There are plenty of quotes from the novel and also page numbers for students to find quotes themselves for that specific technique. Practice essay paragraph writing is also included with modelled answers. Essay structure is also explained. Quick lesson starters are also included in 'Grammar Police', an activity using poorly spelt celebrity tweets for students to correct as a settling activity.

Lesson resources for the study of 'The Simple Gift', a prose fiction text, with a focus on the concept of 'Belonging'. This particular lesson focused on the use of symbolism in the text. It was developed for a lower ability class that thrived on structure who needed to revise on symbolism and essay paragraph writing using the PEEL (point, explanation, example, link) guide. Students are expected to have read the text before this lesson. Contains PowerPoint presentation and accompanying worksheet.

Used with a Preliminary Standard English class for the concept study of 'Consumerism' together with other selected poems by Dawe. These are quite simple annotations as some of the students in my class struggle considerably with poetic techniques as well as with general literary analysis. Set up with animations, highlighted parts of text and arrows to accompanying notes, 33 slides in total but many are because of animations and line by line highlighting.

A 50 - 60 minute lesson that introduces students to the concept of 'dehumanization' and how it is explored through the novel 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' by John Boyne. Includes definition of 'dehumanization', quotes and tone of voice technique analysis.
