I aim to share resources which are ready to print and PowerPoint lessons which are ready to teach. All of my resources are of a high quality and in line with the current Scottish curriculum, or else can be easily adjusted to suit other curricula. Please also see my resource: “Critical essay Guidance” which is an excellent precursor to essay writing after studying The Great Gatsby. I have also included an example of an excellent essay based on an “isolated character” style question.

The Great Gatsby: Critical Essay Guidance PowerPoint Higher/ GCSE

A PowerPoint presentation which should be used to teach pupils how to structure the main body paragraphs of their Critical Essays and analyse and evaluate their quotations properly using an approach called “TIE” ( Technique, Importance and Evaluation) There are 5 example paragraphs which I have labelled, and which include full and detailed analysis. Obviously the slides are printable and I’ve found a useful task is to have the pupils annotate the paragraph once you have taught them and taken them through a couple of examples. Critical Essay Writing Help: Learn how to use “Peer” to structure your paragraphs & Learn how to use “TIE” to fully analyse and evaluate your quotations.

Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation with Charlie Brooker!

This resource is based on 2 very funny, engaging and well written articles by Charlie Brooker. I have made questions for each article as a way of spicing up RUAE practice with my senior classes. My pupils have responded very well to both articles and the questions for each passage are up to date with current SQA standards. No marking scheme.

Starter Activity: I see, I think, I wonder

Purpose: Project an interesting image onto the PowerPoint as pupils enter the classroom and ask them to silently write a response on their slip of paper under the following headings: I see, I think, I wonder. This is a simple but excellent starter activity which gets pupils thinking quite deeply as soon as they come into the classroom. I often use it as a springboard into a new topic, projecting an image which is thematically linked to the SOW in order to generate interest, ideas and opinions from the word go!

I have also included a detailed paragraph plan based on a “character changes” style question. This is suitable for both National 5 and 6 pupils.

I have also included essay plans, one differentiated, and a couple of others tasks. As this is not a complete unit of work I am happy to post for free; maybe someone else can finish it one day and be happy they had less resources to produce! :) Please leave a review of this resource once you have used it in the classroom.

Frankenstein, a dramatic adaptation, by Phillip Pullman. Unit of Work.

(0)
This is a concise unit of work based on the dramatic adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, by Phillip Pullman. It is designed for use with S1/2. The unit has a focus on RUAE, rather than dramatic conventions, although there is some consideration of stage directions within the questions. The unit is comprised of the following: a pre-reading PowerPoint which introduces the Gothic genre and the historical context of the text, a printable unitof work which includes a quiz, questions on each of the acts, amongst some other activities. There is also an end of unit discursive writing task at the end of the unit. This would probably last 2-3 weeks.
