Double Lesson for ALevel OCR TUdor Rebellions focused on the Oxfordshire and Essex Rebellions- more on the Essex Rebellion since Oxfordshire is not very significant and doesn’t have lots of material. Very comprehensive 2 x 2 hour lessons (more if you use the Starkey youtube clip)- ((you may want to include a disclaimer about his views not being the views of your History department!)) and use all of the reading. Essex is such a character- I love teaching this. Significant individuals and their breakthroughs, key words, key factors for change, key inventions etc. Can be set for homework in stages or as a beast and later self/ peer marked in class. Edexcel GCSE Superpower relations Key Topic 2: Cold War Crises Lesson 4 The Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 This lesson follows my lesson on the Cuban Revolution and Bay of Pigs invasion It examines the events of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Khrushchev’s defence of sending missiles to Cuba and Kennedy’s decision making as well as the divisive advice from the Hawks and Doves in foreign and defence policy. The consequences of Cuban Missile Crisis are also covered alongside an 8 mark write a narrative account question. Also includes a gap fill model answer to the Explain two consequences of the Bay of Pigs invasion question including an SEND version with words to use to make it easier.

Edexcel GCSE (Can be used by other boards) lesson on the Arms Race Key Topic 1: Lesson 5 the Arms Race and escalating tension between East and West This one follows my lesson on the First Berlin Crisis 1948 Causes and consequences of the Arms Race between USA and USSR- also includes leadership changes from Stalin-Khrushchev and Truman-Eisenhower and a brief bit of contextual info on Korea (Korea is not explicitly a part of this spec but is useful to see what is going on). Also has links to a video to demonstrate the destructive power of Hydrogen bomb compared to Atomic bomb used in Japan. It follows lesson 4 (Berlin Crisis ) and lesson 5 (the Arms Race) Examines the causes, events and consequences including the impact on relations and views on USA/ USSR etc. Fully resourced does not require textbooks or any other materials.

OCR ALevel Russia 1894-1941 works for other exam boards too! Two hour lesson on Stalin’s cultural revolution and use of propaganda including his development of the cult of personality in four stages to ensure control in Soviet Russia. Fully resourced but can be done more independently using the Corin and Feihn textbooks- if you have them- if not slides can be printed for each group because all info is on there from the textbook. I do the reading so you don’t have to!

Long Term Causes of World War I This is a two lesson looking at the MAIN causes of WWI starting with tensions between the Great Powers and looking at key themes such as Weltpolitik and Imperialism, Alliances and Nationalism and Militarism and Arms/ Naval races. Also includes the Moroccan and Bosnian crises (in brief!) Includes powerpoint, worksheets and several activities- including historiography and interpretations of Germany’s role in “starting WWI.” Suitable for KS3 or as an intro to KS4 unit on International relations.
