Higher Order Questioning - Staff Presentation/Training

(0)
I was asked to put together a presentation for staff to explain the importance of higher level questioning and give some examples of approaches and activities to encourage it. The powerpoint does just that! This was followed up with further training sessions and now I lead a SWG for stretch and challenge. Please feel free to contact me if you would like further explanation of any activities or further examples. I have not been able to upload the Question Generator but can send this to you separately. Also included, a self assessment sheet and notes to go with the powerpoint. Additionally, the slides contained structured questions relevant to the subject, within the Academy I teach at, all subject areas produced a specific one. The idea being that students get more used to higher order questioning and encourages better peer questioning, teachers have a visual aid - often useful if being observed.

The Experiments PowerPoint works through the whole lesson - explaining and prompting where activities follow. It works through looking at the methodology with clips, a case study booklet and the book (we use the Orange Rob Webb Book). Ideas are recorded on the sheet. The Past Questions sheet gives an idea of how the questions are set and the opportunity to try some. Video Clips are provided, except one which would not upload, I have therefore given the link (https://vimeo.com/89396290). Any probs and I can send to you directly. Homework is provided. The Tick sheet is used to help students organise their folders/notes.

AQA 7993 EPQ Taught Skills for Students - The Presentation

This PowerPoint is aimed at students and can form part of the taught delivery. It goes through the final Presentation - how to design and develop it, the issues to consider and how to improve it. It's accompanied with a check sheet and guide. I used this towards the end of the process as students had almost completed their Production Log and their report. There are 2 examples both with some good and bad aspects - these are helpful for the students to discuss. AQA A'Level EPQ 7993

This is a start to memory. The bundle of work contains a powerpoint with various activities to help students begin to think about the role and importance of memory. There are 2 podcasts and video documentary on Clive Wearing. This worked well with my students to get them into memory. I used one of the podcasts as a homework with accompanying questions.

Practical Application: From Design Brief to Proposed Sociological Methodology!

I created this lesson for an observation. It was a 2 hour lesson but you could split it over 2 lessons or reduce it down to 1 1/2 hours. There is a practical starter - reminding of terms and the process of choosing a methodology from start to finish. The main activity comprises of 5 separate applied scenarios. Students are given one of these Briefs and then need to decided what questions they need to ask to proceed further to make decisions about this proposed study. They are then given further information - giving info about personal characteristics, funds, funding bodies etc. There is an activity to run along side this and lesson plan to explain how the lesson runs.

I have a VLC copy of 'The Boy with no Penis' so if the link doesn't work let me know! AQA Psychology A'Level 7182/3

Crime Day: Offender Profiling 'Railway Killer'

(0)
This long activity supports a ‘Crime Day’ for Year 8/9 launched by the school. The activity is designed to last 1hour 20 mins. I have run the session several times and the activities work over an hour lesson but time can be reduced to make the lesson work for a 1 hour slot. The aim of this session is to introduce students to offender profiling (they are not expected to have any previous knowledge). The activities introduce the idea of offender profiling and what it is. Students are then introduced to the real crimes of the Railway Murderer (Railway Rapist) where offender profiling was successfully used. The student copy powerpoint, is simply what I printed off for students and gave out at the relevant stages of the lesson. I made students aware of two important things - 1. There is some relatively graphic content which I included because this information provided important clues. I made sure students knew that they had the option to leave the room if anything was upsetting. I have never had a student leave however! 2. At the end of the lesson, I made sure students were aware that I had used some poetic licence with some of the details. The events are true, but I have made up suspects 1,2 and 4, simply for the sake of the activity. There obviously were other suspects, but I did not have access to any details. I have also made up some of the information, for example the blood groups is entirely fictitious. So please do be aware of this! The activity works well and is very effectively, creating lots of analysis, deduction and discussion. The final slide is time dependent but provide a contrast where ‘offender profiling’ has not worked and actually been detrimental to justice.

It works through the role of Practical, Ethical and Theoretical Considerations (PET), provides activities for these 3 focus areas, using for example Suicide as a Case Study for Theoretical Considerations and Laud Humphries for Ethical. There is a Peer Marking activity with Markscheme. The Tick sheet is used to help students organise their folders/notes.

DISTANCE LEARNING Paper 2: 1. Introduction to Family and Conjugal Roles

This is an introduction to Yr12 AQA Sociology Family. I created it for 1st Lock Down. It’s broken down into **4 one hour lessons. ** I used this with my 3 Year 12 groups, they found it easy to follow and I believe it develops a good level of knowledge and understanding, and importantly encourages students to do something with this acquired knowledge to help make links and develop analytical and evaluative skills. I have made a reference to Clickview - which not all schools use. There may need to be an alternative sought. **
