Beliefs in Soc Revision Booklet Student Activity

(5)
Students were set the task of designing a revision booklet - working together on this as a group activity. The Revision Booklet Doc - 'Their instructions&' suggested all groups follow the same format, so that the end product had common themes. The other docs &';Ideology & Beliefs, Classification of Religion sections' are an example of what some groups produced. Students obtained the &'Possible Questions&'; from past AQA papers and questions suggested in the AQA text.

GCE AQA Sociology: Beliefs in Society (7192/2): Revision Quiz

(4)
Quiz involving 4 rounds - Sociologists, studies, picture round and pot luck. The Joker card enables a group to double their points (groups must declare their joker before the round starts). For a really competitive group 'The Devil Card&' works well, enabling half of another teams points to be stolen! The document has the answers for each round included - make sure these are removed before use with a class!

A2 Blockbusters Revision Game

(3)
This is a Blockbusters PowerPoint (link for music and brief TV clip). The PowerPoint contains two game boards (Unit 3 - Beliefs in Soc, Unit 4 Methods, Crime & Deviance Qus). The word document contains the questions and answers for both game boards, plus a load of spare questions. I asked my students to create their own game board as a homework. You may need to adapt the rules depending on the size of your class!

Note - there are a couple of ‘suicide’ questions included, as the quiz was created pre-spec 2015. These need to be removed and replaced as Suicide is no longer in the Spec.

Witchcraft

The PowerPoint begins with a 'witch bottle&' starter, to intrigue students! They could design their own witch bottle. The PowerPoint goes on to look at images of witchcraft and cases brought to trial. It concludes with punishments, which my class acted out in short sketches, and really enjoyed doing, There are questions to focus/ direct learning and check that learning has occurred.

GCE AQA Sociology: Methods - Concepts and definitions (7191/2, 7192/1, 7192/3)

I used this after tracing methods as a review/revision exercise. I printed the concepts on one colour paper and the definitions on a different colour. So it was a Pairing exercise - group activity. Students all receive a card and had to locate their partner/pairing. I've used the ‘online time-bomb' when using this activity with my students, to create the pressure of time! It's a nice starter to the revision season! This is followed up with a written activity (word doc which tests recall/knowledge) I have a range of other resources uploaded covering methods.

Students were set the task of designing a revision booklet - working together on this as a group activity. The Revision Booklet Doc - 'Their instructions&' suggested all groups follow the same format, so that the end product had common themes. The other docs &';Diversity, Divorce & Conjugal Roles sections' are examples of what some groups produced. Students obtained the &'Possible Questions&' from past AQA papers and questions suggested in the AQA text. This resource/activity was used for SCLY1. It is still useful for the 2015 AQA spec, but would need to have added the personal life of the family and a revamp of the question structure.

Meet the Contestants! Who should be king in 1066?

(7)
Activity to encourage students to consider who might have been king in 1066 - who had the best claim, who was most popular etc It worked well with the PP. Once the lesson was completed, students had the opportunity to can their voting slips, many did and were able to explain how and why their views had changed.

This provides a 1 hour plus start to sociology develops the ideas of society, culture, role, status, stereotyping - as well as developing themes such as social control, belief, family, education etc. There are a good range of accompanying resources to see you through the lesson, to teach from and for students to record their individual/group ideas. This is based on the Shirbits idea. I have a 2 taster sessions (both uploaded).

Introductory Lesson for A/AS Level Sociology

(1)
I use this lesson as my first lesson with my AS/A Level (Year 1) Sociology Class. The outline explains the 2 year course to them, and we use it as a folder organiser for sections of work. The powerpoint then runs through a range of activities, dealing with society, social imagination, norms and values, culture, social construction, ethnocentricism. The activities (word docs and video clip) link to the powerpoint. The key terms sheet allows them to reflect and record at the end of the lesson.
