Inspired by the superb book ‘The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper’ by Hallie Rubenhold, these resources allow the victims of Jack the Ripper to be humanised and help pupils to learn about what life was like for those living in poverty in 1880’s London.

A special one-off lesson I made for my students in the run up to teaching about slavery in the British Empire. I didn’t want them to have the one view of Africa, or to stereotype Africa as a continent full of nothing but warring tribes, so made this lesson. It involves group work investigating various different African countries and civilisations, from various points in time. However, if you don’t like the layout of the lesson the resources will hopefully still be helpful in investigating a wide range of historic African cultures.

Lessons introducing year 7s to the subject of History, through investigating primary resources from ancient Mesopotamia. The aim of the topic is to ignite pupils’ interest in History, share with them information about a unique and significant civilisation, introduce them to the use of sources and how to write essays, and help them understand the use of and limits to archaeology. The resources include power point and handouts, as well as example paragraphs if you wish to also use the essay question given.

For Black History Month: a case study on the Haiti Revolution, adapted from a feedback lesson about writing strong PEE paragraphs. An information sheet is provided, as well as power point slides with questions and a practice paragraph. Could be a useful addition to a lesson about slavery, empires and rebellion.

A collection of primary and secondary sources, both text and images, on ancient China. The sources, along with a selection of questions, helps pupils learn more about the first dynasty of China and develop their inferencing and analysis skills.

Lesson and resources looking at the use of censorship, propaganda and the development of the cult of personality in Stalin’s Russia. Good for in-depth, GCSE studies. Originally organised as a group task but can also work as individual or homework task.

An information sheet is provided, as well as power point slides with a short video and a series of questions on Tubman. Could be a useful addition to a lesson about African-American individuals, American slavery or the Underground Railroad.

A selection of primary sources about ancient Greek women. Sources include written work, material objects, myths and poems about both Spartan and Athenian women. There is also a list of suggested questions that could be used alongside these primary sources.

A revision booklet based on the GCSE topic Migration, Empires and People. It has a list of key words, maps and timelines from the Medieval and Modern world. A lesson introducing megacities, with a couple of starter tasks before focusing on answering questions on a short video. The documentary covers opportunities, challenges and case studies of megacities in South America and Africa.

Two power points with information on the Second World War in the pacific and the eastern front. Designed to make it easily accessible for pupils and to help students learn during lock down. This resource is not part of a lesson and does not have any activities with it, but could be incorporated into a lesson or be a useful resource for revision/introduction to the topic.

Lesson looking at life in ancient Rome. The lesson focuses on the benefits and drawbacks of living in the city of Rome, the starter and plenary allow evaluation of what presumptions/knowledge pupils have on Rome, and how this changes throughout the lesson. There is also time for discussion, pair work and a homework task. All resources needed are included.

A power point explaining what makes a strong conclusion in History essays. It includes examples, practice questions and hopefully will be useful to add into a lesson focusing on writing skills.

A lesson focusing on archaeology and Mesopotamia. Activities include an introduction to archaeology, the challenges of archaeology and how we can use material objects found to learn about the past, with Mesopotamia being the case study.

A series of questions that are answered alongside a documentary about the kingdom of Kush. Could be used in a lesson or as a piece of homework. It provides either a handy introduction to the civilisation, or helps develop knowledge about African civilisations. The documentary and questions demonstrates the strengths of the Kushite kingdom and how it has sometimes been misrepresented by Western writers. Topics covered include their conquering of Egypt, religion, continuing traditions and Kushite pyramids.
