Quadratic Equations with Complex Solutions - Partner Drawing Activity (typed solutions)

(0)
In this activity students will practice solving quadratic equations in standard form by the quadratic formula and by completing the square. All equations have complex solutions. Students will also practice plotting points on a coordinate plane, representing the values of the complex roots of the quadratic equations. An amusing part is the drawing activity where partners will draw easy drawing symbols around the plotted points and will produce a nice picture together. Activity Directions: Each partner is supposed to solve individually eight quadratic equations. The equations are marked with different symbols. Student solves the equations given like this: one equation - by the quadratic formula and the other - by completing the square and it goes still that way. Students show detailed solutions on the recording sheets provided. Then partners plot all the points, representing the values of the complex solutions they have already found on a coordinate plane given. They consider the symbol of each equation to be the symbol of its roots as well. At last students draw the symbol of each equation around the plotted points, corresponding to its complex solutions. All answer keys and FULL SOLUTIONS of the problems are included.

Quadratic Equations with COMPLEX Roots - Password Search Activity (3 versions, 36 problems)

(0)
This activity practices solving quadratic equations with complex solutions. There are included quadratics in standard and vertex form, though most of the equations have terms on both sides. Students will need to simplify polynomial expressions. They are asked to solve the equations by the most appropriate method ( by completing the square or using the quadratic formula ). Activity Directions: Students solve 12 quadratic equations. They use a given table to find which character (letter, number or sign) corresponds to each of their answers and fill in another table to obtain a funny password. Students tell the password to the teacher. If it is correct, then they have solved all equations right. There are included 3 different versions so the product can be used as a partner activity or for groups of 3. The resource also works well as independent practice. Answer keys are included.

Rational Equations (Cross Multiplication) - "Eat the Bonbons" Matching Game

(0)
This is a fun matching game on solving rational equations by cross multiplication. Students have to solve 12 equations as the first six result in linear equations and the rest six result in quadratic equations. There are 4 slides/pages with problems. On each slide/page students are given 3 equations to solve and pictures of four bonbons (candy). Students search for their answers written on the bonbons and if they find their answer written on a bonbon then they “eat the bonbon” striking it through. Then students are asked to match the problems with their solutions. Students can draw identical characters to mark the equation and its solution or they can draw a line/curve to joint the problem and its solution. Student find out that in each slide/page there is one bonbon that “can not be eaten” (the answer written on it is not solution to any of the problems). I hope your students enjoy this activity. Answer keys are included. NOTE: This product is created as a Google Slides product. I have converted it to PDF item here. Solving Quadratic Equations - "Provide and Get Numbers" Partner Activity

(0)
This is a collaborative activity to practice solving complete quadratic equations in standard form by all methods. Students work through sections. In each section, each partner has one equation to solve by a specified method. Equations of the partners in each section are DEPENDENT. The problems are 28 WELL THOUGHT OUT that all have integer coefficients and solutions. Activity Directions: In Section One, Partner A starts solving the equation given and finding its roots while Partner B waits to receive the values of these roots from Partner A. Once the solution set is found Partner A “provides” Partner B with its numbers . Then Partner B places the numbers into the empty squares of his own equation given with two missing coefficients and solves the equation. There is an important instruction - the number which has its absolute value less to be put in place of the first missing coefficient. In Section Two partners repeat the same actions, however this time Partner B starts first. In Section Three, Partner A starts solving first again and it goes still the same way. Recording sheets are included for students to show work . All answer keys are included as well. NOTE: The pages are designed in a way that each partner can solve ten equations or even only six.

Radical Equations with No Solution - Group Activity

(0)
This activity is designed to be used for groups of 4, 3 and/or 2 members. It practices solving radical equations with one and two square roots having no solution. The radical equations contain: a monomial, a binomial and a rational expression under a radical symbol two radical expressions on one side and respectively on the both sides of the equation All the equations require rearranging. If it is possible it requires squaring once. Activity Directions: Partners will each have their own set of seven problems of various difficulty. They can reduce some of them to linear. Students write down the solutions of the problems on the recording sheet provided. Then partners record their answers in tables on a group response sheet and compare their results. They must verify that all equations have no solution except one which has one real root. I called this special equation “white sheep equation” and it is the equation A7. The group which has solved correctly all the equations and has found the “different” equation first wins, however it must keep the result secret so the other groups can also reach it. Answer keys are provided.

This is an engaging activity on solving radical equations with higher indexes. There are 4 pages/slides with problems. There are included 2nd, 3th, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th roots. On each page/slide students solve four given equations for the variables x, y , z and t. Students first find the variable x from the first equation, then they substitute the value of x in the second equation to find the value of the variable y. Then students use the value of y to find the value of z from the third equation and at the end students use the value of z to find the value of the variable t from the fourth equation. Students record their answers in the empty boxes provided. On each page/slide students are given a relation between the fourth variables x,y,z and t so to check if they have obtained the correct answers. Students can work independently or in groups (of 2 or 4) to complete this activity. Answer key is contained at the end of this document. NOTE: This product is created as a Google Slides product. I have converted it to PDF item here. I have included 2 PDF files - the one has each slide as a page and the other has two slides on a page for easy and more economic printing!
