While the content is appropriate for experiences of soldiers from across Britain, some activities are tailored towards the Scottish examination system. As I operate a mixed class, there are activities designed for both National 4 and National 5 included within the lesson. This lesson examines four key battles of WWI involving Scottish soldiers. Two have a specific Scottish focus - Loos and Arras. Each battle is examined in terms of the purpose of the battle, the casualty statistics of the battle, the main weapons used in the battle and their impact, and the main tactics used in the battle and their impact. There are accompanying images of the battle/those involved, as well as of the memorials that now stand at these sites. National 4 students are to then use their notes to write a newspaper article, while National 5 students will attempt a To What Extent 9 mark exam question.

This is the first lesson in a sequence of lessons on Apartheid. It is aimed at S3/Year 9. This lesson looks at the historical origins of Apartheid and encourages students to think about how past events can impact the development of history. Students create a timeline of these events, examine the concept of nationalism, and will then complete a carousel task looking at four key events and their impact on the growth of Boer/Afrikaner nationalism. Students are then asked to consider how this might have then led to the policy of apartheid. Students will undertake a comparative study of the actions and impacts of the Suffragettes and Suffragists. Students will compare the strengths and weaknesses of each campaign. Students will learn about the impacts of WWI on the Suffrage campaigns, and the impacts of the campaigns themselves on women gaining the vote in 1918/1928. Students then have practice exam questions to complete.

The lesson looks at the expected roles of women before WWI, and how WWI helped to change this through the new jobs and roles in society they took on. This is the third lesson in a sequence of lessons on Apartheid. It is aimed at S3/Year 9. In this lesson students learn about the eventual election of the National Party and the following implementation of apartheid policy. Students will then complete a table task on the apartheid laws, and must evaluate their impact. They then complete an empathy task before being introduced to the topic of Bantustans and a mapping activity. Students then learn about forced removals before completing a National 5 level source question as preparation for their senior studies. Students are to work in groups to complete a poster examining political change in Scotland focusing on Red Clydeside (Rent Strikes/40 Hours Strike), a growing political awareness in working class, and the changes to the political parties and their popularity at the time. National 4 students then have empathy tasks to complete while National 5 students have practice exam style questions.

Students will undertake a jigsaw task in which they become experts on one of the Scottish industries affected by WWI. They will look at short term impacts (during the war), and long term impacts (after the war). They will also learn about new industries after WWI, and the impact this had on Scotland. Students will then complete practice exam style source questions and a storyboard activity.

This lesson looks at the early forms of segregation in South Africa prior to the establishment of apartheid policy. Students will learn about four laws which helped create segregation and must then evaluate these policies.
