Differentiated Resources for teaching Organic Chemistry. Differentiated by ability and task. Pupils use the cut out and match-up cards to construct a reaction pathway, from alkenes to carboxylic acids and back and flashcards to learn the functional groups. I have colour coded this into three simple reaction pathways-see picture- you could amalgamate for stronger pupils (or get them to integrate) into one larger web, or provide blanks to expand on the stimulus material. To make Flashcards- simply fold down the centre and stick. For weaker candidates I give them colour coded versions. Additionally, for the flashcards, weaker candidates get given the structures. Stronger candidates can do this as a pair matching or sequencing activity which gives better retention in the long run. Works fine as a starter, revision, plenary or activity.

As it says on the tin- a checklist of things I would expect pupils to do before they go to an interview. Proper preparation and planning prevent pretty poor performance.

A simple 1 hour test comprising of multiple choice, longer responses, data handling (graph plotting and calculations) and reading and comprehension activities. It is editable so you can change it for your needs. Progressively more challenging, from simple responses, to short answers, to open questions. I have included a short reading and comprehension section to support my EFL candidates.

This is something I write for Mts to keep them focussed on their responsibilities at this time of the year. Includes links to guidance on applying to holland, the US, the UK etc, personal statement advice and is a good start for the inexperienced MT. I keep track of all of the applications, personal statements and references through a google drive, but you can edit this to link in to whatever you want. This is a brief over-view, a full presentation required an hour and staff were losing the will to live, so I have chopped it to the bare minimum that I think MTs should be doing.

This is a piece that I wrote for the TES and that I issue to mentor tutors to help their tutees make choices about work experience. It can be edited for your school, and even sent to parents.

For Mentor Tutors really, but can be formatted for parents or pupils (it's editable) With the Brexit nightmare unfolding, European courses are MUCH more attractive/competitive (cheaper for starters, and with academics leaving the UK, this is a perfect opportunity for European unis such as ETH, to poach students and staff from Oxbridge and Imperial). Applications to Cambridge are down by 14% this year- those pupils have to go somewhere and they can't ALL go to Scotland or Ireland. This is a simple guide produced to help advise pupils as to what permutations of subjects to take and the cost of study. I've written it for IB DP but the links will readily allow you to convert for A level or whatever you teach.

This an editable worksheet with weblinks for independent study. Has a graded sequence of questions involving calculations of Kc- from simple to complex requiring logic as well as application of the formula Kc =[products] / [reactants] Includes teacher notes and guidance as to how I differentiate- extend questions etc. At heart this is a simple activity, but you can really tailor this to your need- I like to use it as a refresher before tackling acid/ base equilibria and calculations of pH, but it could be used to reinforce the need to find things out for oneself, or as a homework, or at a stretch, for a cover lesson. leads nicely into Ka

This is a good Pre-IB pupil's lab report that I use as a marking exercise for staff and pupils as preparation for their IB DP work. There are lots of examples out there of pupils' lab reports from primary data- but this one was conducted from secondary source data. A good activity to give to pupils with marking criteria to check they understand the rubric for a lab report.

Flashcards on the theme of REdox Can be used as pair matching. Nothing fancy, but v effective I use this as a starter and as a plenary.

Flashcards for matching pairs game. This is a simple resource of matching pairs. Fine for revision- can be used as matching cards or as flashcards/ sequencing. I use this type of activity as part of a standard repertoire for a starter or a plenary for fact-based learning. It may not be trendy- but assimilating facts is pretty-much the cornerstone of chemistry learning, but pupils don't like it. This sort of activity makes it more entertaining, and with bigger classes you can do it as a race. I have small classes sources so I do it as a timed exercise over successive lessons.
