Ten fully resourced lessons that focus on WW2. These lessons are designed to develop GCSE skills, in particular preparing students for the 16 and 20 mark questions which require students to weigh up factors, make a supported judgements and reach a conclusion. Each lesson includes clear instructions, differentiated resources, and student-led activities, which allow you the time to focus on developing your classes' skills. These lessons can be taught in a sequence or as stand alone lessons to compliment existing units of work.

Students have been asked for their advice on a documentary about why Hitler lost WW2. They are introduce to some key factors which they rank by using a radar graph. They then have to decide how much time should be allocated to each factor in the documentary based on their findings. As always there are clear step by step instructions and differentiated resources.

This lesson aims to develop GCSE skills. Students are introduced to a 'how far do you agree' style question. They work their way through a categorising and a prioritising card sort with follow-up questions which can be used to check understanding and develop their comprehension of the content. Thy then use the categories as their key factors in responding to the question. Literacy support is included as well as a writing frame for the lower ability students. Students label a WW1 trench system. extract evidence from a Horrible Histories sketch about life in the trenches, before analysing sources to determine how accurate HH are in their interpretation of trench life. The main task is writing a letter to the producers to explain how the sketch could be improved. As always there are clear step by step instructions.

Students work out what the key factor was in the RAF's defeat of the German Luftwaffe. Activities include a fact file task, categorising, ranking and a Venn diagram. They then examine a quote from Simon Schama who gives his view on why Britain won. The students use their knowledge and evidence and develop their GCSE skills to either argue against his view or agree. Literacy support included with a writing frame for the less able. Students learn about why so many men died during the Battle of the Somme. Activities include, creating a fact file, a card sort with categorizing and prioritizing tasks and a report writing exercise. Kings and Queens of Britain 1066 - present day (44 A4 posters). Ideal for a classroom display. I have these laminated and have created a timeline around my classroom. Each poster contains a blurb and some literacy support so students can learn some new words. Ideal for new teachers who are looking to jazz up their classrooms!

Students begin by creating a fact file about the event (directed and differentiated). They then look at several reasons why Japan might have attacked Pearl Harbour. They need to sort these reasons into categories or factors that motivated the attack. They eventually decide which factor was key and link this to the best supporting evidence before writing up their findings in a telegram. The last lesson in our English Civil War Unit of Work. The lesson looks at different interpretations of King Charles II which students weigh up against a Horrible Histories sketch. Having done this the students write a letter to the creators of Horrible Histories to explain how the sketch could be developed. Literacy support and differentiated resources included. A lesson that investigates the reasons why Chamberlain appeased Hitler. The lesson starts with an appeasement scenario game whereby students in small groups (2-3) must decide on the best course of action. Their decisions are scored. They then examine the reasons for Chamberlain's actions which link to the scenarios that they discussed during the starter game. After swapping data and discussions the students must decide if appeasement was the right course of action. They end by writing up their findings which is a good opportunity to develop GCSE skills (especially the 16 mark and 20 mark questions whereby students must be able to offer counter arguments and reach a supported conclusion). Writing frames are included for the less able which talks them through these skills.

A decision making lesson on Dunkirk. The lesson includes source based activities, card sorts (categorising and prioritising) and a newspaper article for students to write up their judgement (literacy support and newspaper language provided). Students work through a card sort and a diamond 9 activity to determine the key factors in the German invasion of France. They write up their findings in a report template which develops their literacy skills by asking them to select the best evidence to support their findings. Challenge for the more able who create their own categories and suggest how France could avoid future invasions. As always there are clear instructions and high-quality differentiated resources.

A lesson that focuses on the impacts that the atomic bomb had on Hiroshima. Students use the knowledge for the lesson to create a newspaper article which focuses on 4 key areas (that the choose). Literacy support and differentiated materials provided. As always there are clear instructions.

Students learn about the causes of the 1381 peasants revolt by working their way through categorising, prioritising and discussions before writing up their findings in a newspaper reporting activity.

This lesson works well when studying the Holocaust or Nazi Germany. Students watch a clip from the film Europa Europa (in German). They are required to guess the nature of the sketch before re-watching in English. Following this they are shown a school timetable (showing subjects studied etc). Students need to construct a role play discussing the nature of their education (literacy support included in PowerPoint). The film An Education for Death is also included with related activities.

A lesson that looks at the reason why William needed to introduce the Feudal System, what it was and how it worked. Tasks include; worksheet (literacy support included) and group activity where students create a short play to help explain how the system worked.
