Case study at a local scale of a specified place in a hazardous setting

(1)
AQA Geography A level hazards resource. This is a model answer for the essay question below: With reference to a local scale of a specific place in a hazardous setting, assess the extent to which the physical nature of hazards can shape the character of a community and its ability to respond to risk. (20 marks) I have written this question and model answers to help students revise this section of the course: Case study at a local scale of a specified place in a hazardous setting to illustrate the physical nature of the hazard and analyse how the economic, social and political character of its community reflects the presence and impacts of the hazard and the community’s response to the risk. Having looked at the textbooks for the section, I felt that the materials on offer were not very effective. Therefore, I have created this document with a model question and answer as well as supporting web links that have maps and diagrams that can be effectively used to create an ‘analyse’ type question. This resource has been seen by an AQA advisor who confirms that it effectively teaches this element of the course. This resource will require a one hour lesson and homework to teach with.

‘The Disaster Response Curve (The Park Model) in relation to tectonic hazards.

(0)
‘The Disaster Response Curve (The Park Model) has contributed to improved understanding and therefore management of the impact of tectonic hazards.’ To what extent do you agree with this view? [20 marks] Students I teach find it difficult to evaluate the Park model and as AQA released an example of this in relation to tropical storms, I have decided to create a tectonic version instead. The first version of the essay contains too much content and I use this to get students to discuss the validity of the arguments in each paragraph. Students then decide on which paragraphs should be omitted. The second page of the source contains the edited version with an outline of table that students can use to summaries the advantages and disadvantages of the model.
