Having spent 16 years as an analytical chemist, microbiologist, and ecotoxicologist, I made the move into teaching just over 10 years ago. The resources I build try to incorporate elements of fun, discovery, and personality into the curriculum topics, whilst also ensuring that the essential literacy, numeracy, and digital competencies are covered.

The structure and functions of blood

(0)
This is a resource built around the parts that make up blood. It is a literacy based resource which informs pupils about the structures that make blood as well as identifying the functions of the individual parts. Once the text has been read pupils can then go on to summarize their understanding by having a go at the cloze (filling in the gaps) task, and then further develop their application of the information gained by answering the GCSE based questions, including a final ‘Quality of written communication’ (QWC) task about ‘Sickle cell anaemia’.

Enjoy using this 8-page booklet with your pupils in Science over the festive period. It incorporates comprehension style questions along with literacy building tasks as well as numeracy challenges to ensure the learning continues through the fun. Energy types and transfers are covered, there’s a distance time graph and speed/time/distance calculations to complete, and even some Science themed Christmas cards to design. An enjoyable and yet learning-based series of activities that should keep your pupils entertained during the yuletide. Feel free to alter the ‘Santa’s sleigh dash’ text to incorporate your local areas and keep it personal to your pupils. Nadolig Llawen. Happy Christmas.
