AFRICAN MUSIC PROJECT Year 7 and Year 8

AFRICAN MUSIC PROJECT Year 7 and Year 8

(2)
African Music is a very popular topic in Key Stage 3 Music. This project focuses on Rhythm and Metre, balancing theoretical elements such as basic note durations, time signatures, and specific features of rhythm and metre with live group performances. The cultural and historical elements of the music are also a focus within the unit, and explicitly so in 2 of the tasks for the benefit of subject-specific Citizenship requirements. The project is divided into 2 ‘lessons’, which fit perfectly into 2 x 100-minute lessons, but also very well into 3 action-packed hour-long lessons… I have personally taught this project in both of these formats. The theoretical content works best with most Year 8 groups, but can also work well with high-ability Year 7 groups; the performing and composing tasks work great with either year group. The video tutorials take the pressure off you, the teacher, if you need half an hour or so to check homework, etc. Let me teach your students how time signatures work, what triplets are, and how graphic scores work while you mark a few books, if you want! I take great pride in the quality of my resources and I welcome feedback and enquiries from my colleague-customers the world over. I can be contacted directly at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com and I would be delighted to hear from you. Thank you for considering this resource for your classroom.

Gamelan Music of Indonesia Project Year 7 and 8

The resources included in this download reflect the exceptional value for money and quality that you rightly expect when purchasing from Rainy Night Music. Indonesian Music is a fascinating topic for KS 3 students to explore. It offers so much in terms of history and culture, and a unique style of music which is very accessible to wide-ranging ability groups. This project focuses on Gamelan and specifically its performance and composition. The project balances cultural and historical contexts with musical characteristics of the Gamelan genre, and there is plenty of time allowed for practical work with you, the teacher, in charge of the precise timings. The project is divided into 2 ‘lessons’, which fit broadly into 2 x 100-minute lessons, but also very well into 3 action-packed hour-long lessons… or indeed 4 hour-long lessons with more time allowed for practical work through the vast resources included in this pack. I have personally taught this project in both of these formats. The content works best with most Year 8 groups, but can also work well with able Year 7 groups. The video tutorials take the pressure off you, the teacher, but also provide you with a step-by-step guide if you are unfamiliar with Gamelan yourself. In this pack you will get an overview/ teaching guide plus each of the following: Lesson 1 worksheet and Lesson 2 worksheet; Lesson 1 PowerPoint and Lesson 2 PowerPoint; Sibelius score of Lesson 1 Task 4 (in 10 Sibelius versions from Sibelius 4 up to Sibelius 7.5); Sibelius score of Lesson 2 Task 1 Blank Template (in 10 Sibelius versions from Sibelius 4 up to Sibelius 7.5); Video Support in MP4 format for Lesson 1 and for Lesson 2; PDF of word search Starter Activity and PDF of crossword Starter Activity; MP3 audio for each of the 4 starter melodies in Lesson 2; PDF of Section B (Advanced) for Lesson 1 Task 4 and PDF of full version with repeats; MP3 audio for Section A, Section B, and a full version of the Gamelan Ternary Piece used for Lesson 1 Task 4. I am very proud of the quality of the resources that I publish, and I hope that you and your students will enjoy them as much as I and my students do. I welcome feedback and enquiries from my colleague-customers all over the world, and I can be contacted directly at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com. I would be delighted to hear from you. A LEVEL MUSIC ANALYSIS and BINARY FORM

A LEVEL MUSIC ANALYSIS and BINARY FORM

(1)
There are at least 2 lessons (if not 3) here. It is perfect for bridging the gap between GCSE and A Level Music. Although the focus is on the different types of, and quirks within, Binary forms, and the 3 separate worksheets focus on 3 separate piano pieces in Binary Form, developing broader analysis skills runs throughout this project. The 3 pieces I have chosen for the case studies are: Evening Song by Daniel Gottlobb-Turk; The Theme from Mozart’s K.284 Piano Sonata in D Major; and Minuet in G BWV Anh. 114 by J.S. Bach. A Sibelius 5, 6, 7, and 7.5 score for each of these is included in the pack. Each study piece has a 2-page worksheet with another 2-page (detailed) answer sheet, and students are set questions based on harmony, tonality, metre, instruments (including transposition tasks), and aspects of melody, in addition to questions about form and structure. There is also a 2-page ‘key information’ sheet outlining the different Binary Forms (symmetrical, asymmetrical, rounded, balanced, simple, continuous, and sectional). All of this is included on the 14-page PDF document in the download pack. You will also have a handy PowerPoint in the pack in order to help you deliver the lesson: objective and outcome slides; key word/ term slide; header slide for each of the 3 study pieces, and an optional suggested homework slide (JCF Bach Allegretto in F) including links to the score and audio (correct at time of publishing). I used this as preparation for the study of more complex exam set works, and I did so for two reasons: firstly, projects like this enrich the repertoire that students become acquainted with and deeper, longer-lasting learning takes place; secondly, many set works have far too many elements for a lot of students to cope with straight out of GCSE, so simpler pieces like these allow learning to take place quicker. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of the resources that I publish, and I welcome feedback and enquiries from all of my colleague-customers across the world. I can be contacted directly at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com and I would be delighted to hear from you. Thank you for considering this resource for your classroom.

GCSE Music Terminology Puzzles HARMONY TONALITY

(0)
This pack is one of six in a series from Rainy Night Music which covers over 350 key words, terms, and instruments listed as Language for Learning on all new UK GCSE Music syllabuses. There is more than a 90% crossover of key terminology between WJEC/ Eduqas, AQA, Edexcel and OCR, and this series covers them all. This particular pack deals with Harmony and Tonality. Specifically, the 7 key-word groupings for these activity sets are: Names of Chords; Types of Chords; Chord Progressions; Chord Arrangements; Standard Tonalities; Alternative Tonalities; Tonal Features. For each topic stated, there are 8 key words (56 in total) which may form the basis of a theory and listening lesson, but will certainly link the words in a related and structured way - in much the same way MFL vocabulary is taught. Each topic has a word search designed to pre-teach the key words, a flash card template (for students to complete through independent research for homework) to pre-teach the definitions, a mix and match activity to provide the actual definitions. Ideally, the actual theory and lesson will follow this to allow consolidation, and then the crossword activity serves as the revision activity. ALL activities have FULL answers provided with this download. However, there is a great deal of flexibility in how you use and get the most out of these activities – my personal recommendation would be to re-use the mix ‘n’ match activity to create an additional resource (where the terms are not separated from one another), and use it for Quiz-Quiz-Trade starters and plenaries in Year 11. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of the resources that I publish, and I welcome feedback and enquiries from all of my colleague-customers across the world. GCSE Music MODES and POP CHORDS
rainynightmusicrainynightmusic

GCSE Music MODES and POP CHORDS

(0)
This topic builds upon prior knowledge of chords and scales. There is a dual focus in this topic on modes and added and suspended note chords as found in Pop Music, including how they are labelled and inverted. Students are introduced to the Ionian mode which they identify as the Major scale. They are then taken through the Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian modes, focusing on how each of these modes are simply rearrangements of the Ionian about different notes. Students are taught how rearranging the notes (and therefore chords) of the Ionian change the sound because it changes the tonality of strategic chords – most notably the Primary chords. Activities follow to transpose and identify modes using their unique fixed-interval semitone (half-step) patterns. Students are then introduced to added-note chords, specifically the added 2nd, 4th, and 9th chords – all chords that will be found in any study of The Beatles. Students are taken through how major, minor, augmented, and diminished chords are written in pop music, and how the notes can be worked out using scales and the intervals between the 3 basic notes of the triad. From this point they are shown how to add the 2nd and 4th and how the 2nd becomes a 9th – and plenty of activities follow to consolidate the learning. Following this, suspended-note chords are introduced using similar techniques and, again, plenty of activities follow to consolidate learning – all with detailed answers. The conclusion is to briefly look at Power Chords and inversions of basic pop chords – again, with activities. All of this comes with a 34-slide animated and beautifully-presented PowerPoint, annotated with detailed teaching guidance notes, to make delivery of the topic smooth and efficient – plus a 6-page student information sheet, 4-page activity sheet, and 3-page detailed answer sheet. With regards to the listening questions, MP3s are provided (and they are always my own compositions), and you may well want to insert the audios into the slide rather than use media player. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. MUSIC BINGO Chords

MUSIC BINGO Chords

(0)
A set of 3 tiered Music Bingo Games based on various 3-note chords/ triads. Level 1 would be suitable for beginners to reading music; Level 2 would be suitable for slightly more experienced readers; Level 3 for more confident students. Each of the 3 Bingo Games in this set has 15 different chords, presented in a variety of positions. Each game has 12 unique playing cards, which can very realistically be doubled up for a class of 24 students. Each game also has a master calling card containing 2 clues (one easier, one more difficult) to describe each of the 15 chords on the calling card. Each unique playing card has a total of 9 of the 15 chords on it. This set of 3 is specifically designed to facilitate and accommodate progress, working really well as both a fun revision tool and a general learning tool. The Level 1 game is suitable for beginners, being based on root position major and minor triads found in major and minor keys up to 3 sharps and flats. All chords are presented in the treble clef. The Level 2 game is suitable for slightly more experienced musicians, being based on inverted major and minor triads found in major and minor keys up to 4 sharps and flats. Although chords are still presented in the treble clef, the second set of clues offer more of a challenge than those in Level 1: eg. ‘This chord is the tonic/ subdominant/ dominant of A major’. The Level 3 game is suitable for more confident musicians, being based on inverted major, minor, augmented and diminished triads found in all major and minor keys. Although chords are still presented in the treble clef, the second set of clues offer more of a challenge than those in Level 2: eg. ‘This chord is the supertonic/ submediant/ leading chord of B major’. This set is available as part of a 6-pack Bingo Bundle, here: [https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/music-bingo-bundle-12178022]. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. GCSE Music MAJOR and MINOR SCALES

GCSE Music MAJOR and MINOR SCALES

(0)
This lesson focuses on Major and Minor Scales, and that includes both the Harmonic and Melodic Minor scales. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. 11 x written/ notation tasks develop students’ ability to create major and minor scales using fixed-interval patterns, use these scales to create basic triads, and observe the differences between the harmony in melodic minor scales and harmonic minor scales. There are 10 x listening questions to conclude the lesson, in which students’ ability to distinguish between major and minor scales is tested, and those of higher abilities may distinguish between the harmonic and melodic minor scales. By the end of the lesson students will have a secure knowledge of the topic, and you – the teacher – will have more than enough scope to set additional activities as homework should you wish to. All of this comes with a 33-slide animated and beautifully-presented PowerPoint, annotated with detailed teaching guidance notes, to make delivery of the lesson smooth and efficient – plus a 4-page student information sheet, 4-page activity sheet and 4-page detailed answers sheet. With regards to the listening questions, MP3s are provided (and they are always my own compositions), and you may well want to insert the audios into the slide rather than use media player. Primary Music Listening Activities SET 1
rainynightmusicrainynightmusic

Primary Music Listening Activities SET 1

(1)
This structured resource pack is an excellent introduction to analysing music and is perfect for youngsters aged approximately between 5 and 8 years. Students use their knowledge of colours to help them understand musical features relating to the musical elements. Five whole 1-hour lessons are included in the pack with fun, themed colouring worksheets for the students, Detailed PowerPoint with audio links (tested and working as of April 2020) and full teaching guidance so that you feel completely supported whether you are a music specialist, or not. It is easy to deliver. Full Details: How this works is as beautiful as it is simple. There are 5 themed lessons, each with its own colouring-in worksheet: In the Woods; Beneath the Sea; Out on Safari; On the Farm; Up In Space. A specific piece of famous classical music is the focus of each lesson, and the music has some kind of link to the theme. For instance: In the Woods is Vivaldi’s Autumn from the Four Seasons; Copland’s Hoe-down is the one for On the Farm. Each student worksheet has 8 pairs of statements. Two of the eight are opinion-based (such as ‘I like/ do not like this music’). The other 6 are related to musical elements and specific features of the piece of music used for the lesson. For example: The music is fast/ slow. Each statement has a colour pattern to use, and where statements are a little more complex (such as ‘I can hear only stringed instruments’ or ‘I can hear wind and stringed instruments’) they can link their knowledge of colour to reach the right answer. For instance: a child of 5 or 6 years old probably doesn’t know what a string orchestra sounds like, but they know that a bee should be black and yellow, not blue and pink. So, to colour a bee, they know the statement for the black and yellow colour pattern is correct. Accordingly, they know they can only hear stringed instruments. As they colour, and listen to the music (which they must be encouraged to do) they begin to subconsciously learn ‘what a string orchestra sounds like’. This system allows young students to develop musical analysis skills by building on prior knowledge of colour - not to mention becoming acquainted with composers and music from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern eras. Furthermore, the opinion-based questions (like/ dislike; mood changes; interpretation, etc) offer excellent opportunities for the teacher to lead group discussions. All of this comes with full resource support for teaching and learning. I thoroughly recommend it. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of the resources that I publish, and I welcome feedback and enquiries from all of my colleague-customers across the world. Music Poker Playing Cards Chords and Scales

Music Poker Playing Cards Chords and Scales

(0)
These cards are such fun, and they are an incredibly good way for students of all abilities to build an understanding of chords, scales, and clefs. The beauty of these cards – which are based on a standard deck of ordinary playing cards – is that the game can be played at any level. If your younger students have a basic knowledge of treble and bass staff notation along with simple major and minor 3-note chords, then they can enjoy this game in full. If your older students have super-advanced knowledge up to and including alto and tenor staff notation along with augmented and Neapolitan 6th chords (and beyond!) then the game can be played at that level instead. After inventing this game, I had my own set of these cards professionally printed and I bring them to dinner parties when I am surrounded by fellow music teachers – it is honestly the best thing any of us play together, which is why I advertise this game as being for both the classroom and the staffroom. The aim of the game is simple: collect the note pitches that you want (or need) to create whichever chords and scales you want; when you have what you need, play your ‘hand’ and earn the number of points on the cards that you play. The game ends when you want it to, and could go on for hours, or just 15 minutes before the end of the lesson (or the start of parent evenings)! Please watch the video to gain further insight into this resource, which I cannot recommend enough to you. The files are all PDF documents: a master card PDF from which you can print all the cards, correctly aligned front to back for convenience (laminate them for longevity); a full explanation of the rules of the game on a second PDF document; finally, a PDF scorecard, including space for up to 70 entries for 5 players for easy tracking of the scores. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of the resources that I publish, and I welcome feedback and enquiries from all of my colleague-customers across the world. HSC Music 2 Stage 6 Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.2 Movement 1 Sibelius Scores for Analysis

(0)
This movement is ideal for study as part of the Stage 6 Music 2 HSC Program. As a full first movement from a Barqoue Concerto Grosso, it fits into the mandatory area of study Western Music 1600-1900. A Sibelius score is an exceptionally powerful tool to have for analysing chords, themes, motives, and much more, at the click of a button. There are clear advantages of having a Sibelius score as a study aid. With the later versions of these scores, you can isolate individual parts to show melodic lines and harmonies more clearly, you can use the chord analysis and ‘find motive’ functions making analysis quicker and easier – and there are several other analysis plug-ins that Sibelius offer, making your life much easier. Another clear advantage of having a Sibelius Score in addition to a paper one is that it is an invaluable aid to improve score-reading: the playback line runs along with the music and students can better see what is happening. Certainly, my students all benefited from Sibelius scores for their set works. A complete list of versions included in this download pack is as follows: Sibelius 7.5; Sibelius 7; Sibelius 7 First; Sibelius 6; Sibelius 6 Student; Sibelius 6 First; Sibelius 5; Sibelius 5 Student; Sibelius 5 First; Sibelius 4. If you would like an earlier version, please just email me, and I’ll add it to the resource pack. Also included in the pack is a high-quality soundcard MP3 extraction of the full score for you to use in the classroom. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of the resources that I publish, and I welcome feedback and enquiries from all of my colleague-customers across the world.
