I am in my sixth year of teaching English at a secondary school and I also have responsibilities for reading across the school. I also have a form group so most of my lessons are mainly based around key English topics with some PSHE and Citizenship added in there too! I'd love to know what you think so please feel free to leave me some feedback :)

Act One Scene One - Romeo and Juliet

(0)
I used this extract as a mock examination however it could be used as a normal lesson too. Students are provided with a section from Act One Scene One (I have broken it up to make it easier for lower ability students to digest) and an appropriate examination question. There is also a scaffold included and a really useful and detailed self/peer assessment section.

How to analyse an extract from Romeo and Juliet

(0)
A really useful lesson (that can quite easily be expanded into a few lessons) to help lower ability students explore an extract from Romeo and Juliet independently. This will be specifically useful when meeting the demands of the new curriculum! There is a handy scaffold to use as well as four examples of it being used to analyse an extract. There are also five extracts from the play attached.

This lesson is loosely based around The Wife of Bath but can be adapted easily. Students will get to grips with what report writing looks like, have a go themselves and take part in a detailed peer assessment to explore their strengths and weaknesses.

GCSE writing skills

Three lessons in one! Students need to read a text (provided) and pick out key information from it before writing as a character from that text. This will enhance both reading and writing skills. They will also explore different forms used when writing and finally infer meaning from a text.

(0)
A lesson exploring the moment that Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time. This lesson has a specific writing focus - mainly looking at using different clause types - however the extract provided and analysis of key words could easily be expanded.

Chaucer - historical context

Students will independently explore Medieval life for peasants, townspeople and lords. I placed my peasant facts on the floor, townspeople facts were pinned lower down around the room and lords were placed on tables - students really enjoyed the physicality of having to move around like a peasant/townsperson/lord so this may be something to consider if delivering this lesson!
