Here is a week of ‘Gather’ based on Who let the Gods out. It starts with a WAGOLL of the two main characters meeting, develops vocabulary, discusses other authors of fantasy narrative and allows chn to find their authorial voice. A video clip allows for visual literacy and we end with a short writing task based on character. Each lesson begins with a SPaG recall activity to develop chn’s understanding and lower the cognitive load when they begin to write. All slides have notes annotated to help lead discussions and pick out key teaching points. All resources for the week are included. Please note I do not own the rights to any extracts used from various novels or the video clips.

This is a week of grammar skills based on writing a newspaper about evacuees arriving at Budmouth Point. The skills covered are formal language/Standard English building to using the subjunctive form, Past simple, past progressive (review) and past perfect tense and using direct and reported speech. I do not own the rights to any videos used.

A yr5/6 3 week cycle of learning based on a Newspaper Report. Chn will write a report on the ‘attack’ of Buckingham Palace Guards that takes place in the book. Chn will gather information in week 1 which they will be able to build upon in week 2 with their grammar skills before writing independently in week 3. Grammar includes: direct speech, relative clauses, dashes, commas and brackets to mark parenthesis.

A Stone Age Boy inspired 3 week Talk for Writing resource. Includes WAGOLL and PowerPoint slides which have notes on how to differentiate and stretch chn in the class. Each day is broken down with tasks and ideas on what to put into books. Embedding the text into the children’s long term memory so that when it is time, they can retrieve this information and apply the skills to their own work. A fun and interactive learning week that gives the building blocks for future learning. The grammar skills focus are coordinating conjunctions, with the FANBOYS broken down into their uses, prepositions and lots of chance for AfL and self and peer reflection. All tasks in week 2 link to the work undertaken in week 1. There may be some resources to make but all ideas are on the slides to structure. Week 3 breaks down the planning and writing that will be undertaken by the chn whilst giving them ownership of how they want to communicate.

This is a gather week where chn collect vocabulary and ideas for their write in week 3. They create a toolkit for a newspaper write based on articles from newspapers in WW2. They create vocabulary banks which can be referred to and use a range of books to gather information on how evacuees were received. This will help them to write their newspaper article based on the arrival of evacuees rather than the departure of. As chn were relocated due to the Blitz, there are 2 lessons where chn collect ideas about the Blitz and what it would have been like. They will finish the week writing a setting description of the Blitz which could be used, in part, in their newspaper write in week 3. I do not own the copyright for the extracts used.

A grammar week building on from week 1’s work on vocabulary. This week includes expanded noun phrases, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions as well as speech punctuation. Throughout the week there are starter tasks aimed at building chn’s accuracy and creativity with their writing. There are self and peer assessment opportunities built in to the week and an entrance and exit ticket to allow chn to build their metacognition. All worksheets and tasks are included. I do not own the rights to any videos used within this resource.

This is a 2 week cycle that leads up to a child’s independent write of a setting description of Narnia. Week 1 consists of a WAGOLL, a comparison of setting descriptions where children can form their own style that they want to emulate, speaking and listening opportunities as well as links to visual literacy. Each lesson has a quick SPaG or spelling activity as we near to SATs to continue our practice. Week 2 reviews speech and how it is punctuated, relative clauses, figurative language, adverbials and layered planning. All resources come with the download and the ppt has notes to help with the understanding of the lesson.
