Starter activities for electrolysis

Starter activities for electrolysis

(2)
A range of four useful starter activities when teaching ‘Electrolysis’. Includes a useful reviews of essential prior knowledge (ionic bonding and ions), an activity to compare and contrast molten and aqueous electrolysis, an opportunity to review predicting products of electrolysis and a summary exam question.
Writing ionic equations worksheet scaffold
stevesim123stevesim123

Writing ionic equations worksheet scaffold

(6)
A scaffolded worksheet to help students understand how to write ionic equations of metal displacement and halogen displacement reactions. It reviews ions and formulae before providing worked examples of how to write ionic equations and then breaks the process down into several easy steps.
Covalent, ionic and metallic bonding video question sheets
stevesim123stevesim123

Covalent, ionic and metallic bonding video question sheets

(1)
Two video question sheets to introduce covalent, ionic and metallic bonding. Structured video question sheets provide a great scaffold to focus students and ensure they get the key knowledge down required for the next part of the lesson or so they can actively participate in a discussion of the video. The URL links for the video question sheets: Covalent and ionic bonding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgD9yHSJ29I Metallic bonding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S08qdOTd0w0
Dynamic equilibria question sheet
stevesim123stevesim123

Dynamic equilibria question sheet

(1)
A handy quick check activity for students to apply their understanding of dynamic equilibria with a specific focus on using reversible reaction symbol, understanding how the concentration of reactants and products changes in a closed system, product yield and how position of equilibrium relates to relative amounts of reactants and products.
Ionic, metallic and covalent bonding questions
stevesim123stevesim123

Ionic, metallic and covalent bonding questions

(1)
A series of level 8-9 questions covering ionic, metallic and covalent bonding allowing students to apply their knowledge to challenging quesions. Useful for helping students aim for the top grades and think carefully about applying their knowledge of structure and bonding.
Electrolysis check for understanding (CFU) questions

Electrolysis check for understanding (CFU) questions

(0)
Structured question and answers for checking understanding during several lessons on electrolysis. There are three powerpoints with various questions. Each covers the following: Introducing electrolysis (concept of electrolysis, predicting products of molten salt electrolysis, the process of electrolysis). Writing half equations (checking whether students can identify errors in half equations and write them for anions and cations). Predicting the products of aqueous electrolysis and writing half equations for the formation of oxygen and hydrogen gas from aqueous ions. The powerpoints can be used in the following ways: As a revision exercise to question students after the topic (interleaving). As a quick paced started activity to question students (cold calling). Used with mini-whiteboards to check student progress during or at the end of a lesson.
Equilibria and industry question sheet
stevesim123stevesim123

Equilibria and industry question sheet

(0)
A useful question sheet to help students apply their understanding of the role of equilibria in industrial processes and the need to find compromise conditions between rate of reaction and equilibrium yield of product. A versatile resource that can be used as the following: Starter to review learning Quick progress check within a lesson A plenary to check what students have understood. A quick revision exercise to recap this key equilibria knowledge.
Equilibria knowledge quiz
stevesim123stevesim123

Equilibria knowledge quiz

(0)
A great low stakes assessment covering the key principles of equilibria. Includes writing definitions, describing dynamic equilibria and reversible reactions, predicting and explaining the effects of changing temperature and pressure on equilibrium yield, the role of compromise conditions in industrial processes. Could also be used for the following: Revision activity Portion it up into a starter activity Progress check Low stakes assessment (formative) Focused summative assessment
Electrolysis video question sheets
stevesim123stevesim123

Electrolysis video question sheets

(0)
A structured question sheet to focus pupil efforts during explanatory videos on the topics of molten and aqueous electrolysis. Each question on the sheet chonologically matches the content in the video, reducing faff and increasing focus. A useful exercise to introduce concepts visually and ensure key knowledge is written down and absorbed by students. I have provided the links to each question sheet below: Introducing electrolysis URL link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uIIq_Ofzgw Introducing aqueous electrolysis URL link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrgYXk_NCec
Equilibria decision tree
stevesim123stevesim123

Equilibria decision tree

(0)
A great resource to help students understand how changing the pressure or temperature effects the position of equilibrium and hence yield. Students review the initial decision tree and then apply this to other examples (both generic and a chemical equation). Really useful for embedding this and providing a scaffold before attempting extended answer response questions.
NMR structure determination scaffold
stevesim123stevesim123

NMR structure determination scaffold

(0)
A table to allow students to break down the key steps in determining a structure using NMR data. This simple table scaffold allows the students to do the following: Identify the chemical shifts values for each peak Identify the splitting pattern for each peak Calculate integration ratios from relative intensities Suggest a structure for each of the fragments All of this allows them to methodically and sequentially construct the structure of the compounds from each of the individual “jigsaw pieces” of information provided in an NMR spectrum. This table will minimize the cognitive overload that students experience when attempting to solve unstructured NMR structural determination problems.
Electrolysis knowledge quiz
stevesim123stevesim123

Electrolysis knowledge quiz

(0)
A comprehensive knowledge quiz covering half equations, predicting products of aqueous and molten electrolysis and defining key words. Answers included.
