Geography in the News is quiz based on current news from a geographic perspective. This quiz will suit students from upper primary school to upper high school. ​ A new quiz is published on Sunday each week based on news of the previous week. ​ The quiz has two pages with five mapping questions and 15 multiple choice questions - answers are given in the second pdf download. ​ The quiz is a PDF that you can download and print for your classes. The quiz is coloured but will photocopy well as b/w. ​ How are schools using Geography in the News? As a quiz that can be completed in as little as 6 minutes. Group research. As homework exercises that students can research the answers from a range of news websites. Weekly group competitions within the class over a term or the year. Weekly school geography competitions to promote the subject. This is a worksheet that asks students to investigate the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck New Zealand's South Island on 13th November 2016 (UTC). There are three pages to the worksheet: Page 1: Background of New Zealand - students will locate important features of NZ's physical landscape on a map and fill out a fact file. Page 2: Features a map of New Zealand (same as this worksheet's cover image) with a number of questions on the size of the earthquake, location of the epicentre and the major tectonic plates involved. Page 3: Mainly questions on the impact of the earthquakes and the NZ government response and that of the international community. This worksheet will help develop your students enquiry and internet skills.

This is the first in a series of Geographic Challenges. This Challenge requires students to investigate the geography behind the 2017 Dakar Rally. Students will need to access internet sources to answers questions or complete tasks relating to background information on the Rally, climate, landforms and environmental sustainability of the 2017 event that began on 2nd January. The resource is a 3 page pdf file and purchase allows you to use the worksheet in as many classes at your school that you wish and also in the classes of colleagues at your school. The worksheet may be useful as extension work, homework or as an assignment that students can complete while the rally is on. This worksheet is a great and engaging way to take your students out into the real world of geography beyond the textbook to practice their skills in using latitude and longitude as well as extending their knowledge of climate and landforms.

This is a 4-page worksheet that gets students to investigate the city of Shenzhen in China which has grown from little more than a fishing village in the 1970s to an expanding metropolis of 11 million people today. Shenzhen is commonly known as the "Silicon Valley of China". The worksheet has some mapping questions that look at Shenzen's location and changes in land use over time, some statistics on the climate of the city, and a series of questions on the growth of the city and its impact that can be answered from the BBC News (link is provided). An answer key is provided for teachers. The worksheet would be useful for the Australian Curriculum unit on Liveability and for those jurisdictions where urban development is a focus, perhaps from lower to upper high school Geography.
