Powerpoint introducing the laws of employment. Features a true and false, starter, key details of the following laws: Minimum Wage, Equal Pay, Health and Safety and Sex, Race and Disability Discrimination Acts.
Presentation also features a picture asking learners to spot the dangers in the workplace (health and safety) as well as being shown a cropped pic of 5 random people and being asked to say who they notice the most. They are likely to maybe say the man (as he is the only man) or the black girl (as she is the only black girl) very few if any students will say the blonde girl, but the next slide reveals the bigger picture and ask the question again, nearly all students will reply the blonde girl because she is sat in a wheelchair and this will always get their attention more than the other people in the photo. I always ask them further do they think she is really disabled or pretending , students largely feel she is pretending as she has her legs crossed, however I then reveal via slide she is in fact a genuinely disabled woman and I provide info on her.
The pic was a real fashion shoot for a Debenhams range of clothes and it made headlines as it was the first time they used a disabled woman to model on the high street.
It leads nicely into discussion of the Disability Discrimination Act and the end of the presentation.
Further slides highlight Industrial Action, Single Union Agreements and the role of ACAS.
(Tattoo pic relates to recent advice from ACAS saying people with tattoos should not be discriminated against when applying for a job)
Final slide is a plenary activity pic from The Office asking students how many different employment laws can they identify in the photo.
