AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language - Example Written Responses

(6)
A wide collection of written responses for AQA 8700 exams. I’ve used these as examples and have written them with ideas from marking real exams. I asked others to write some so they appear more authentic. I’ve had students who, for whatever reason, find it hard to grasp an example answer if it’s typed. So I thought this would help. They have seemed to work better once they’ve decided the scruffiest must be mine! No work has been replicated, here. But they are very good examples, particularly the Jigs and Reels responses. The structure ones were based on what I was hoping to see but never actually did. Students over complicate it most of the time and map out the text gaining 2-3 marks. These examples show how differently the question can be approached. Students can mark them, with some support and you yourselves can have a practice if you’re new or haven’t marked for AQA. DISCLAIMER - All marks are close approximations. Having marked for a few years, I have noticed that sometimes standards can minutely shift from year to year.

AQA 8700/2 GCSE English Language - Persuasive Writing Revision Workbook

Now with accompanying Powerpoint! Grade boosting - I hope! - a workbook like the other I’ve created. Specifically around skills and some ideas of how to boost grades. Good for most students to work independently but lower level students will need some support. It covers all the basic elements of writing for P2Q5 - Nonfiction. It has an example answer, a number of tasks to complete, format/layout of the main forms and some extra persuasive features like anecdotes and expert opinions.

A Level English Language - A Brief History of English with Embedded videos

Updated - Animations had been stripped…they’re now back… Take your AS/A level Eng Lang students through the ages via this quite detailed 2-3hr session. Visually pleasing and videos, embedded for ease of use, are also placed into an old TV Set template. It adds a bit of charm to it but is just a gimmick. My students made notes from slides but all images are of good enough quality to print if you right click them and save as image. I used some of them to make a display with students but they created a giant timeline on a wall with craft materials. Any feedback will be welcomed as it was my first year and some of my students did well so it would be good to improve and update.
AQA 8700 GCSE English Language - Paper 1 Question 3 Structure

AQA 8700 GCSE English Language - Paper 1 Question 3 Structure

Linking to Paper 1, Question 3 - this worksheet has 4 narrative expositions and grids for students to organise their ideas. It pushes them to make one main point about how interesting the opening is and then explain how the reader is affected, whilst using three quotes/key words or phrases to evidence it. I usually use it as a stretch and challenge exercise, in extra revision sessions or as bookends to a session. The PPT is a recent thing which allows it to be used as a more inclusive lesson. It offers a strategy to aim for 8 minutes and as much of a sophisticated answer as possible.

I have a sample pair of these in my shop for a clear preview. The texts are pretty small on the paper 2 ones but people have generally found them okay to read. I’ve added a larger version of the Hair Paper 2 Micro Mock - just in case. These Micro mocks are editable and if you want to reword/change questions then Word documents are also available - after purchase via email. Just send a request to leckyletters@gmail.com with a screenshot of your receipt.

Good for use with my SPaG session for GCSE AO6 - halloween theme. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/aqa-8700-1-ao6-technical-accuracy-in-depth-overview-halloween-spag-12181966 With a full contents page, students can navigate themselves through the session or take this home for homework. Covering all major punctuation marks, some tenses tasks, plural practice as well as homophones and homographs. I have a free version of this in my shop - which is aimed at lower-level students and is quite close to the original from which it is derived.

AQA 8700 GCSE English Language - AO2 Being Perceptive

Want to challenge your students to write in a more sophisticated and perceptive way? Want to impress observers with your natural embedding of maths? There is a reason some find English difficult and, more often than not, it’s because they think they can’t do it. They think it’s difficult - like maths can be. However, this lesson could change all that and help your students realise how easy it is because we are programmed to do it! This 3 hour lesson is split across two 1.5hr sessions and includes formative tasks and homework. There are detailed animations to provide a number of different examples of patterns across language and structure, using shapes and images and text boxes in a visually pleasing manner. There are no handouts with this as students are encouraged to write down some notes and small quotes and to take pictures with their smart devices. It also includes a short TED Talk clip teaching you how the human brain is programmed to recognise patterns…

THIS can be used as an introductory session or extension one. It has a set of 3 car ads embedded for the starter activity - Evaluate which car is best. Fully animated with the mark scheme and a set of 3 evaluation statements which are different in complexity. The text extract is from Helen Simpson’s ‘Constitutional’ - a little story called ‘The Door’. Use the exam-style tasks in class and as homework for further practice.

Cover image from www.flickr.com - Free for commercial purposes… The scene for analysis is Season 3 Episode 4: ‘And Now His Watch ish Ended’ GOT is available on HBO and HBO NOW © Covers all questions and tries to move away from mainstream PEE paragraph structure. Triangulating and embedding evidence is encouraged but the slides can easily be switched back if you choose. This could be spread out across a couple of weeks of 3hr sessions because it’s 45 slides long and has revision slides for basic terminology. It covers every Paper 1 question, linking directly to the original exam-style paper included - to which the presentation refers constantly, throughout. Practice skills for: AO1 - Identify Explicit Information AO2 - Explain, analyse and comment on a writer’s use of language. AO2 - Explain, analyse and comment on a writer’s use of Structure. AO4 - Evaluate critically, another person’s opinion of a text. AO5 - Creative & Descriptive Writing. It is aimed at 16+ due to the violence of the war scene and it might also be too much for lower level learners. If you have, however, ventured into descriptions from historical wars - check it out. It is very engaging with a visual interpretation to show before reading the text. It’s also laden with step-by-step animation. Each click leads you to the next logical point. Went through this today and was very easy to use…

AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language Paper 1 Question 3 Foreshadowing Structure

(0)
This uses a character from GOT books and a couple of other famous text examples, with animated annotations and analyses of foreshadowing. One is annotated and the final one is blank which also comes in A4 PDF. The penultimate task can be group annotations, pairs or individual and then finally provide the structure question to write an exam-style response for assessment purposes. Finally, there is a foreshadowing grid for extension, which is guided for less able students. This guidance can be removed for more able students.
