Top 25 Jobs in Canada: A One Page Webquest

Top 25 Jobs in Canada: A One Page Webquest

Are you covering a work or employment theme in your classes? Have your students learn about the top 25 jobs in Canada, according to a popular media website! This one page (okay, one page double-sided) webquest directs your students to a popular website to answer questions about the top jobs in Canada. The website has been running this feature yearly for some time now, so you can be sure it will run for some time in the future. What does this webquest offer your students? It tackles the issue of “you can not be what you can not see’.” If you’re working with newcomers to Canada as I am, you’re probably aware that many of them simply don’t know what jobs are out there. Well, this webquest addresses that. It also works on the skills of following instructions, comprehending information, and reproducing information. It helps develop skimming skills and the ability to identify key information. Who is this webquest for? It’s primarily aimed at English language learners from CLB 2-4, but it could also be used in elementary school classes. It could also be used at higher levels: while the language is simple, the content is not. Anything I should know? Webquests require a lot of explicit guidance at first. When I start doing them, I usually take students the process of answering the first one or two questions, step by step. You can never be too obvious when showing students how to complete them. Anything else? For your convenience, an answer key has been provided. The web site has been confirmed active and in use as of 2018-04-15. Feedback is appreciated! :)

groupwork self evaluation sheet metacognition reflection group work

groupwork self evaluation sheet metacognition reflection group work

A sheet designed to be used by pupils after a piece of workwork. It allows students to think about the processes that they undertook and how & why their practice could/should be improved in the future. It ties well in to metacognitive thinking in that it allows learners to address the entire learning experience and not simply knowledge. This should help promote even more effective learners at a departmental & whole school level.

Fishing for connectives display

Fishing for connectives display

This colourful under-the-sea themed display includes 30 different connectives grouped by their uses: To put ideas in order. To add evidence. To add more information. To explain. To emphasise. To contrast. To conclude. As well as all of the connectives on different shaped fish, it also includes all signage including a ‘Gone fishing…for connectives’ sign. I use it with my KS3 students in order to encourage them to use more connectives in their written work and develop their answers. Edit - In the previews, it looks like the connectives are written across the fish but in reality all of the words are actually inside the fish templates so the display is much neater than the previews suggest!

Connecting Classrooms on Skolinks

Connecting Classrooms on Skolinks

Skolinks is a teaching tool, in english, spanish and french, with a secure environment. It's very easy to use, for youth (6 – 25 years old) as well as for teachers. Youth can find their own correspondants while teachers can find a safe and friendly environment for creating classroom partnerships from around the world. Correspondance wets the appetite for reading, writing, discovering and exchanging information with other people. It also allows you to open yourself up to others and to a different world and helps you get a better understanding of others, thus allowing acceptance of differences in perspective. Moreover, whether its as an individual or as a class, it creates an efficient and fun way to learn another language by providing an authentic context for communication. All you need is an email address to create your own account. Once your account is activated, you can complete your profile and search for a correspondant by language, age, region of the world or for teachers by grade level, age, subjects taught. After having accepted other Skolinkers as friends, you can contact them and begin to correspond. It’s also possible to do videoconference. Because it's the most important point for all of us, here you can find all the security measures : https://www.skolinks.com/en_GB/how-it-works.html Skolinks is a project of Skolidarité, a non-profit french association.

KS1 Writing Assessment and Skill Progression with special reference to EAL students

KS1 Writing Assessment and Skill Progression with special reference to EAL students

NOTES FOR TEACHERS 8 stages of writing progress that tracks written skills in fiction, including phonics, vocabulary, grammar, composition, handwriting and punctuation. It can be used to track progress for children learning English as a foreign language or with some small adjustments for all pupils in KS1. A bank of skills which can also be used as targets for the next steps in their learning. Written after the end of National Curriculum levels to form part of our new progress and assessment in school. We decided to focus on tracking fiction as non-fiction wasn’t able to reflect the range of skills we felt we needed to track. If you would like the second part of this progression tracker you can find the KS2 development over on TES shop ClassGems.

WINTER Dobble

WINTER Dobble

This is my version of a popular game - Dobble. Dobble is a simple pattern recognition game in which players try to find an image shown on two cards. Each card in Dobble features eight different symbols, with the symbols varying in size from one card to the next. Any two cards have exactly one symbol in common. For the basic Spot it! game, reveal one card, then another. Whoever spots the symbol in common on both cards claims the first card, then another card is revealed for players to search, and so on. Whoever has collected the most cards when the 55-card deck runs out wins! I hope you find it useful. Please, leave a review I will be very grateful!
