This is Week 3 in a 12 week English scheme of work for UKS2 based around ‘Secrets of a Sun King’ by Emma Carroll; this is a fantastic book which follows the adventure of three children as they explore the history and mystery around King Tutankhamen and Ancient Egypt. During Week 3, the children will be checking the book makes sense to them by creating a glossary of words specific to 1920 and Ancient Egypt (the two time periods in Secrets of a Sun King). Children will develop their inference skills as they meet two new characters in the book. The children will also be learning about modal verbs and adverbs to indicate degrees of possibility. They will be using the grammar techniques to write an explanation paragraph detailing whether they think artifacts should have been removed from King Tutankhamen’s tomb or not.

This week the children explore how expanded noun phrases conveying complicated information concisely. Children extend their learning to include adjectives and prepositional phrases. As the week progresses, the children summarize information about the mummification process and have the option to mummify an orange! The week ends with the children planning the next stage of the story.

To finish the unit the children will be planning and writing a persuasive piece on how they think King Tutankhamen died. The week starts with the children studying the theories behind King Tutankhamen’s death. The children progress on to studying the WAGOLL, looking at persuasive techniques and the structure of a persuasive piece of writing before writing their own argument. The week, and unit, finishes with the children having a class debate about how they think King Tutankhamen died.

Secrets of a Sun King’ by Emma Carroll; this is a fantastic book which follows the adventure of three children as they explore the history and mystery around King Tutankhamen and Ancient Egypt. This week is centered around the children writing a diary entry as ‘Lil’ the main character in Secrets of a Sun King. After studying a WAGOLL and finding the features in the Success Criteria (semicolons, colons, hyphens to avoid ambiguity and passive verbs), children write and edit their own diary entry.

Week 1 from the full scheme of work described here: This is the first week from a full scheme of work for Upper Key Stage 2 children comprises of 60 x 1 hour English lesson plans and ALL resources (differentiated) for a 12 week unit centered around ‘Journey to the River Sea’ by Eva Ibbotson. The unit covers non-chronological report writing (based on the Amazon Rainforest); biography writing, poetry and persuasive writing. As well as four rich writing opportunities (non-chronological report writing, biography writing, poetry and persuasive writing) the unit covers many punctuation and grammar aspects through bespoke teaching videos and teaching slides. The unit covers word classes, prepositions, relative clauses, determiners, cohesion, subject and verb agreement, perfect form of verbs and irregular verbs. The English unit has strong links with PSHCE as it explores the themes of prejudice and discrimination in ‘Journey to the River Sea’ as well as learning that personal behaviours can affect other people.
