AQA Exemplar Folder for the new GCSE (Not Endorsed)

AQA Exemplar Folder for the new GCSE (Not Endorsed)

This is my own take on what I believe a level 9 folder could look like for the new AQA GCSE in Design and Technology. It is appropriate for the children's learning and play sample context and covers exploring a context, iterative design, prototyping and client led brief. There are 40 slides each with a commentary and a summary at the end of each A0. I have worked for the AQA for 20 years with 25 years classroom experience where many students achieved 100% for their coursework so this is based on that experience.

The work of others - New D&T GCSE. Inc. SMCE issues, research methods and design stratagies

The work of others - New D&T GCSE. Inc. SMCE issues, research methods and design stratagies

This is a 5 lesson resource pack to deliver the new GCSE content, focusing on The work of others module but also developing drawing skills and understanding research methods too. Students are to research and analyse, understand how designers use research and briefs to inform design decisions. A main component of this project is developing understanding of how Social, Moral, Ethical and cultural issues effect the products we design. Students are to develop their understanding of design strategies and working collaborative. I have delivered this to my year 10 class of 25 students, mixed ability. Activities include card sorts, articles to reduce into SMCE issues, research and team work.

Construction Materials: making and testing bricks and cement

Construction Materials: making and testing bricks and cement

A great practical activity for students who may be less academic; this experimental work will help students to see the relevance of chemistry to the construction industry. NOTE that access to a kiln (usually present in most secondary art departments) is required to make the bricks. There are instructions for making bricks and reinforced cement beams. Students then perform tests on the items they have made. There is follow up work provided on student worksheets

AQA New 9-1 GCSE Exemplar folder, guide, checklist and tracker

AQA New 9-1 GCSE Exemplar folder, guide, checklist and tracker

An exemplar folder produced to accompany the new AQA GCSE to illustrate how students can approach the NEA. This is NOT endorsed by the AQA but is produced by an experienced designer, teacher, moderator and consultant to reflect expectations for a Level 9 NEA project. It is supported by a student guide, a checklist (which should not be used as a writing frame) and a tracker and grade prediction spreadsheet which uses grade boundaries derived from the boundaries on the old spec. There will be no official boundaries for some time so this will help you to give some prediction in the meantime.

Sweet dispenser Unit of Work

Sweet dispenser Unit of Work

This Unit of work is a project designing and making a sweet dispenser. The project has the following resources (9 files): Lessons Powerpoint (16 slides) which includes lesson objectives, assessment objectives and examples Design specification worksheet Examples of sweet dispensers Types of sweet dispensers Ergonomics and Anthropmetrics worksheets Machinery handouts for hand router, morticer, lathe and pillar drill Detailed explanation of how to make 4 different types of sweet dispenser - *waterfall, downfall, jar and shaped Cutting list and final idea worksheet A homework sheet with 3 homeworks that compliment the project designing another product that can dispense. I ran this project with year 9s and used it as a way to improve more technical machine skills and I ran demonstrations on the router, lathe, pillar drill and morticer. The four different types of sweet dispenser* I have shown how to make have varying levels of skill which allows for easy differentiation. It is also a project that allows students to develop their independent working skills.
