Parts of a Circle

Parts of a Circle

Students learn how to identify and measure the different parts of a circle while using the correct mathematical equipment. A fully diferentiated worksheet is included with this lesson. Differentiated Learning Objectives All students should be able to identify and construct the radius, diameter, circumference and area of a circle. Most students should be able to identify and construct a radius, diameter, circumference, area, chord, tangent and arc. Check out my blog at mr-mathematics.com for: * Fully planned and differentiated maths lessons for KS3 and GCSE grades 1 - 9. * Schemes of work based on pedagogy and teacher support. Some students should be able to construct circular shapes using the appropriate terminology and investigate basic circle properties.

Spatial measurement - volume, perimeter, circumference, surface area, area - identify misconceptions

Spatial measurement - volume, perimeter, circumference, surface area, area - identify misconceptions

I created this activity as part of a post-grad project to assess primary student misconceptions in spatial measurement of area, perimeter, circumference, surface area, and volume of shapes including cuboids, prisms and cylinders. Students essentially calculate the various properties of a shape, which is slowly manipulated and recalculated bit by bit, with each step being more challenging than the last. Questions have been asked which relate to common misconceptions in maths and will provide insights into whether students really understand the concepts of area, perimeter, circumference, surface area and volume, and if they are able to apply what they do know to potentially real life situations. I really enjoyed doing this activity with my primary (grade 6/year7) students and found it fascinating to see what misconceptions they had. It's worth noting, however, that the last task proved too challenging for them so perhaps it would be better suited to a grade 7/8 or year 8/9 class. This activity will take about an hour. It comes with an answer sheet and a few notes for the teacher, highlighting misconceptions children may have.

2D Shape Properties, drawing and sorting. 2 presentations and 4 differentiated worksheets.

2D Shape Properties, drawing and sorting. 2 presentations and 4 differentiated worksheets.

I have combined material for 2 lessons on 2D shapes. The first presentation talks about and identifies properties of 2D shapes including: edges (curved or straight), corners, symmetry, right angles and the key points of quadrilateral shapes. With this lesson I have included 2 worksheets. One for lower ability (LA) and one for higher ability (HA). Both worksheets ask children to gather data on the properties of 2D shapes. The second powerpoint looks at sorting 2D shapes into venn diagrams as well as a brief introduction on how to draw 2D shapes. The worksheets included for this presentation are venn diagrams which need to be sorted. One for LA and one for HA. ***I strongly advise teachers to have a practice run through both presentations for a more effective lesson.***

Year 1 or SEN Worksheet on properties of 3D Shapes

Year 1 or SEN Worksheet on properties of 3D Shapes

This is a colourful worksheet where the children have to name the 3D-Shape and then find out how many corners, edges and faces each shape has. The LO and SC is on the worksheet which will make marking much easier! I have used this with my lower group children in Year three and they loved the colours! I also gave them the physical objects/ shapes to manipulate and find the answers.
