Introduction to writing - PAFT, GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDEXCEL

Introduction to writing - PAFT, GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDEXCEL

This session is a quick paced, fun, interactive session with group and paired activities, handouts include match up tasks, planning tasks, read and obtain tasks and helpful handouts. This is an introductory lesson to writing using PURPOSE, AUDIENCE, FORM, TONE (PAFT) . It is focused for the Edexcel GCSE English Language paper as many of the questions of this paper are multi layered / skilled and ask for layers of understanding from the student in ways that other exam boards don’t. It comes with a “writing gibberish” starter and takes the student through various stages which can help them improve their own writing, get into the habit of planning but also touches upon being able to analyse writing, therefore bridging over both the reading and writing section of the exam. This session is aimed quite low as it is an introduction but does offer elements of stretch and challenge for more able students. It comes with helpful handouts for low ability learners and tackles some more high level concepts such as tone. There is enough material in this resource to be adapted into two sessions if needs be but is also adaptable to include more if necessary. Please be aware that the TES preview does sometimes distort the way the resource looks and this is not always a true reflection. Hope it helps

Key Stage 3 English Language Exam Prep

Key Stage 3 English Language Exam Prep

A lesson, which could stretch over two, 1 hour, periods this lesson prepares key stage 3 for a practice language exam. This lesson is based on the sample AQA English Language Key Stage 3 paper which avaliable on their site, I cannot put this as an attachment due to copyright laws BUT this is very easy to find on the AQA site. The lesson walks the pupils, step by step, through question 1,2,4, and 5 by using model examples and top tips to answer each questions - there is also time for the pupils to have a go at this question too. Question 3 is omitted from this ppt as we don’t include it on our own examination for key stage 3, but it can be easily added if required. Many thanks for looking :)

Persuasive Writing Self-Assessment Activity - includes FAR marking strategies

Suitable for KS3 and KS4. This resource is suitable as a criteria sheet that students can use to achieve their persuasive writing targets. They can keep re-visiting the sheet for HW tasks too throughout the year (if it’s glued into their exercise books). The key strategy governing the activity is that students are taking charge of their own progress and learning to be independent learners as the criteria sheet is an important tool in their learning toolbox. The activity also deploys FAR marking techniques.

Ahoy There! Clue-Solving Quiz for Juniors, with full-page illustration

Ahoy There! Clue-Solving Quiz for Juniors, with full-page illustration

This is a 3-sheet quiz involving pirates, sea perils and treasure. Only 2 pages are visible here - the 3rd comprises a lively, humorous picture of pirates on a boat, unaware of an approaching sea monster. The first page sets the clues to the dangers ahead, as they head for their treasure island, the 2nd page is the picture, and the third is the Answers page, with an invitation to add another danger, cryptically, with answer below. picture and answers. This dramatically themed and attractively presented cryptic quiz promotes literacy (spelling, vocabulary and reading and writing fluency), fact-checking and knowledge-building, as children unravel the clues and add their own. Recommended for Yrs 3-5 approximately, in groups, pairs or individually. The picture can then be coloured in. Follow-on idea: ask children to write an adventure story about the pirates and all those dangers they’ve missed.

End of Term Year Quiz June 2018

End of Term Year Quiz June 2018

I hope your class have had a great year. You’ve worked so hard and you deserve to use this for…all your classes at least once? So I’ve made it broad enough to apply to ages 11 - 19 with no amendment. 5 rounds of questions: 1. Film and TV 2. Children’s Literature 3. News headlines 4. The Royal Wedding 5. Music Intros. The films and TV programmes , news headlines and royal wedding are from 2018 while the children’s books referred to are mostly classics with a few recent best sellers, The music intros are linked to YouTube. All songs selected are from this year and suitable for all ages while still (hopefully!) being cool. I’m sure the kids will give you their opinions! The newspaper headlines round asks students to write their own true headlines to go with the pictures provided. This can also vary in assessment depending on the ability of your class. It’s difficult to give definitive answers to some of these (no PowerPoint should have to burden all of Donald Trump’s newsworthy stories), so links have been provided to Google searches for news on the person in question. Enjoy and have a wonderful summer! : )

Act 4 Scene 3 Macbeth GCSE English Literature 9-1

Act 4 Scene 3 Macbeth GCSE English Literature 9-1

Everything you need to teach Act 4 Scene 3 of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. This is also available as part of a bundle whereby a considerable saving can be made; following the full scheme is recommended. The lessons have been created specifically for teaching at GCSE level, and cover the key assessment objectives for 9-1 New-Specification AQA: understanding of the text, language and structure, context/themes/author intent (although equally applicable to other exam boards). Differentiated outcomes and tasks allow you to reach all learners, although I would recommend the lessons specifically for middle to higher ability students. Throughout the scheme, students are encouraged to make notes and annotate the text, as this will be a valuable revision tool when preparing for exams. No fear version is also included as a further scaffolding tool for lower ability learners. Teacher notes are provided on the PowerPoint to help explain and guide you through all phases of the lesson, with a range of interesting and engaging tasks for you to choose from. Importantly, full analysis is provided for all the tasks set, to enable you to lead interesting and engaging discussions which will deepen the students’ appreciation of the text. Strictly speaking, there is a lot more here than you would fit into a 1 hour lesson, so you may wish to spread this over a couple of lessons, or perhaps be a little selective with the tasks you wish to do. PDF version is for preview purposes. Buy in confidence from a TES recommended gold author! If you make a purchase and find the resource useful, why not get another one absolutely free? Simply leave a review for the resource purchased, email with your TES username alongside a link to the resource you would like. Your free resource will then be sent over right away!

Colourful Dragon Rhymes - for all ages

Colourful Dragon Rhymes - for all ages

Ideal end-of-term fun for classes of all ages, with scope for physical movement and multi-arts development. Once there was a dragon dressed in red. He liked to stay all day in… - but you can guess the last word, and so can the children, although some may prefer to offer alternatives with other rhyming words. Red is just one example of the numerous colours featuring in these crazy dragon verses, which lend themselves to being enacted, and even sung to a made-up tune, as well as chanted and clapped. Follow on with dragon sketches or try my dragon’s menu for easy, crazy writing fun.
