KS2 / KS3 French Personality Descriptions printable writing activities (worksheets and fun puzzles) to help you plan lessons for a Les Traits de Caractere (de Personnalite) unit. They are based around 20 adjectives to describe personality (word mats included) and some could be used to review adjectival agreement, the use of être and common intensifiers (très, un peu, assez, trop etc). Vocab support pages: A support word mat of key questions and all 20 adjectives, a table of adjectival agreement and a card of six common intensifiers.
4 worksheets (with answer keys). Worksheets 1 and 2 come in 1-and 2-star versions, with 1-star being for lower ability, younger or less experienced students. Worksheets 3 and 4 are comprehension worksheets, with Worksheet 4 being more challenging.
A hidden word puzzle to review the unit by having students spot mistakes with the character trait adjectives (including adjectival agreement) in very short sentences. They then assemble the letters in the corresponding boxes to find a French word to complete a final sentence.
A word search puzzle: there’s an easier one-star version, with the start of the French words given, and a two-star version without that support. There’s a hidden sentence challenge using the remaining letters.
A crossword puzzle: The 1-star version of the crossword contains a word bank for support. Use the 2-star version if you would prefer your students not to have this. There’s an extra challenge at the end here too.

This is a popular hands-on Year 1 (Y1) making sentences or jumbled sentences word ordering resource. It’s a full class set of 30 different reusable simple sentence building activity boards, which now also comes with an additional worksheet version of all boards. Originally designed for Year 1 (or Primary 2 in Scotland), these sentence construction SPaG / Grammar activities could be used elsewhere in EYFS / Reception (Primary 1 in Scotland) and Key Stage 1, depending on ability. Emergent writers love lifting the words off the boards to sort and unscramble them to find the hidden sentence. With an engaging picture clue and title on each board, this word sequencing Literacy Basic Skills resource suits a range of learning styles. Colour print on quality card to make it sturdy and laminate for repeated use. It’s ideal for using as a regular activity, with children working on a different one each time. Or choose the ones you make up if working with a small group. It could be used with SEN / ASN groups or others requiring writing support.
Words are printed in faint grey in a random order. Once laminated, cut the word strips and stick each word on top of this faint type, using Blu Tack, Blu Tack ‘Glu Dots’ or equivalent. Each strip is in a different colour to help identify the board it is from. Train the children to replace the words to these starting positions and to wipe boards before putting them back. Three slightly different versions of this game are included, with minor changes to a small number of phrases with locations in them. This is to better suit learners in US & Canada (Page 1 of the PDF), Australia and New Zealand (Page 2), and UK and Ireland (Page 3). The vocabulary card can support younger, less experienced, or less able students.
Brief instructions for students are printed on the board, together with fuller instructions on Page 5 of the PDF file. In turn, students roll a dice and move the appropriate number of spaces. They have to say aloud in German the word, phrase or question they land on, otherwise they return to the space they came from.
You may wish to print the board in A3 for larger groups but it works well in A4 too.

The Powerpoint includes teaching points about gender / plurals of French nouns and the difference between using un / une / des , le / la / les and mon / ma / mes. It teaches children how to answer questions such as 'Qu’est-ce que c’est? (What it it?) and ‘Tu as une gomme / un crayon?’ (Do you have an eraser / pencil? etc). Includes words for door, window, chair, other furniture as well as pencil-case / schoolbag / stationery / school supplies items ( dans ma trousse / dans mon sac / mes affaires).
Due to differences between UK and US terms for some of these words, I have included 2 versions to cater for both. Please note the previews show the UK versions.
After the vocabulary has been introduced and key teaching points explained, further slides test the students’ vocabulary before the answer appears on the click of the mouse. There are tasks for students to understand and talk about what is in pencil cases and bags. Also, two interactive games are included. Un Jeu de Kim (Kim’s Game) is a memory game and works well with groups competing to be the first to write the correct French word on their whiteboard for the object that is missing. ‘Frappez les Objets’ is a ‘Splat’ game, where a small group competes to hit or point at the correct picture when the teacher says the French object. A non-interactive PDF version of the PowerPoint is also included in case you don’t have PowerPoint.
In most cases where terms differ between UK English and US English, both terms have been included.

CONTENTS:
Vocabulary support: Two word mats (one for physical descriptions and one for character / personality descriptions). Display or print if any students require them. There’s also a card of common intensifiers (trop, assez, un peu etc), as some of the cards contain these linked to describing character traits (I am very friendly, I am too lazy etc). Please note these 3 vocabulary support pages are included in some related resources too.
Translation cards: A set of 24 cards for oral practice of describing people in French, mixing both physical descriptions and personality. Print and laminate as required. In pairs, students translate the text on their card into French, practicing speaking it together. Or they could read the French and translate it into English. The 6 English language sides are designed to be printed back-to-back with the 6 translation sides for student self-checking. If you prefer, the translations could be printed as separate cards.
Reading comprehension: This worksheet (included at 2 levels with answer keys) also mixes physical descriptions with personality descriptions, with a short third person text. The one-star version is for less experienced or less able students. It features the same text but has multiple choice questions.
3 four in-a-row games and 3 puzzles worksheets for fun revision of the KS2 Y5 / Y6 statutory word list of 100 words. They work well for Year 6 SATs tests preparation, or use as starter tasks, early finisher activities or as stations in spelling / SPaG lessons. Ideal as fun, meaningful fillers activities too. These use UK spelling, punctuation and grammar rules.

3 HIDDEN WORD / SPOT THE MISTAKES PUZZLES:
Puzzles feature sentences containing multiple words from the Year 5 and Year 6 spelling list, most spelled correctly
Students check carefully to spot errors and highlight corresponding letters in the grid at the bottom
Rearrange highlighted letters to form another word from the spelling list
To save printing, print puzzles on card and laminate. Students use whiteboard pens, allowing repeated use
Puzzles are included with a pastel background, to reduce glare for dyslexic learners and others for whom this is helpful. If not colour printing, it becomes a greyscale background, which you might like, though there are also versions without a background
Spotting errors may help students remember to check their own work and help them avoid errors themselves
Individual, pairs or small group use
For differentiation put lower ability children into pairs, perhaps with a higher ability student. You could allow a word list or dictionary for support
3 FOUR IN A ROW GAMES:
Each board contains 36 sentences featuring a misspelled word from the Year 5 and Year 6 word list
These words are printed in bold and underlined
Pairs or individuals can play against each other, aiming to correct 4 adjacent spellings in a line - horizontally, vertically or diagonally
Students roll dice to determine from which column they must pick a sentence
Print and laminate for regular use
Originally designed for A3 printing, and I recommend this, with students writing directly on the board with a thin whiteboard pen. However, it works fine in A4 (you may need to adjust printer settings). If A4, students could write their spelling on a mini whiteboard or paper and put their initials in the space if correct
