Saint Dwynwen / St Dwynwen's Day

(0)
Ideal for home learning / distance learning in Wales, these puzzles are based around independent internet research. Celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day on 25 January with these 2 fun and flexible no prep puzzles about Saint Dwynwen / Santes Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of love and lovers. Although the crossword would need to be printed, the other puzzle can just be displayed on a screen and students can message you the answer. The zip file contains a True or False Hidden Word Puzzle and a Crossword Puzzle, plus solutions, all in PDF format. These activities work well as follow up work to an assembly, as part of a stand-alone lesson or as part of a longer topic. They could be used as starter tasks (if building on previous learning), as individual or group tasks to focus pupils’ own research, an informal assessment task at the end of a topic or mini-focus, early finisher tasks or engaging homework tasks. These would best suit Upper Key Stage 2 / KS2, early KS3 and other equivalents. The Hidden Word Puzzle includes 15 statements about St Dwynwen and St Dwynwen’s Day, which is the equivalent of St Valentine’s Day in Wales. Pupils must work out which ones are incorrect and then, using the grid at the bottom, rearrange the letters linked to the incorrect statements to find a word related to the subject of the puzzle. This is a very flexible resource, which works especially well to focus pupils’ own online research. All statements can be checked by looking through the first few websites that come up in internet searches. Children will practise reading comprehension skills and skimming and scanning strategies. They will also practise their digital literacy skills as they check facts, evaluating the reliability of websites used, ensuring they check more than one website etc. The solution to the puzzle, identifying and correcting the relevant statements, is included on a separate page. As versions of Dwynwen’s story can vary, the puzzles focus on details agreed on by several key websites. The crossword could be used with the same pupils as although there is some overlap between the two puzzles in the information covered, there are also details in each which do not appear in the other. No preparation is required, other than simply printing and copying. Two previews are provided, with a 4-page PDF document - containing the puzzles and their solutions - in the zip file. I hope your students enjoy using these puzzles. I would be grateful for a review if you get a spare moment. Thank you for your interest in my resources. Please visit FullShelf Resources for engaging, time-saving printables, activities and presentations to plan Primary (and some Secondary) Literacy / English, Maths / Numeracy and French lessons. Celebrate the life and poems of Scotland’s national Bard on 25 January - or at any other time of the year - with these 2 fun and flexible no prep research puzzles worksheets about Robert Burns and Burns Suppers. The zip file contains a True or False Hidden Word Puzzle and a Crossword Puzzle, plus solutions, all in PDF format. These activities work well as follow up work to an assembly, as part of a stand-alone lesson or as part of a longer topic. As one of the puzzles focuses on Burns Suppers, it could be used with a class holding a Supper of their own. They could be used as starter tasks (if building on previous learning), as individual or group tasks to focus pupils’ own research, an informal assessment task at the end of a topic or mini-focus, early finisher tasks or engaging homework tasks. These would best suit Second Level (especially P5, P6 and P7) and early Third Level (Upper Key Stage 2 / KS2, early KS3 and other equivalents). The Hidden Word Puzzle includes 15 statements about the most famous Scottish poet and lyricist, Robert Burns. The crossword could be used with the same pupils as there is only slight overlap in the information covered. The crossword focuses on Burns Suppers, with clues on aspects such as ‘Address to a Haggis’, ‘Toast to the Laddies’, ‘Toast to the Lassies’, ‘The Immortal Memory’, ‘The Selkirk Grace’, ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and the food traditionally served at a Burns Supper. No preparation is required, other than simply printing and copying. Or post online for your students. They would need to print the crossword but the other puzzle could just be displayed on screen. KS2 Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 maths dice games for place value up to millions and decimals to 3 places. Includes games for 4, 5, 6 and 7 digit numbers (thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands and millions) and 1, 2 and 3 decimal places (tenths, hundredths and thousandths). A fun, more challenging and strategic twist on an old idea, these 19 games will make students think carefully about where to place digits, practise their ordering skills, develop interesting tactics and prolong the uncertainty until the final moments. 24 pages, PDF format. Great for starters, early finishers, revision or as a fun homework task Many levels of challenge - ideal for differentiation or for use across year groups Use as printed worksheets or else laminate (or use in dry-wipe sleeves) and complete with whiteboard pens Instead of playing in pairs, you might form small groups - pairs could play against pairs instead of one-versus-one and you might appoint a checker who can adjudicate (and then swap roles for the next game). Consider enlarging to A3 for larger groups. There is a mixture of Make the Biggest Number, Make the Smallest Number and Greater or Less Than games   Every turn, players can place the digit they throw on any row or column, until there are no vacant boxes remaining, prolonging the uncertainty! Keeping an eye on each other’s numbers as they form, players will begin to spot new tactics; for instance they might notice that a 1 placed in a thousands place might not be so costly if there’s a 9 in the ten thousands place, depending on what their opponent is doing on their grid. They can also practise saying their completed numbers aloud at the end.   If you don’t have a 0-9 dice, the games still work with a 1-6 dice. Alternatively: Use 0-9 spinners (I have included black and white and colour templates for your convenience) if you wish to make some Use digit cards (basic digit cards included in the file) Use a pack of playing cards (use Aces as 1 and Jacks as 0, put aside the Kings and Queens; shuffle the pack and take one card in turn)   Instructions are printed on the boards.   Thank you very much for supporting my store.   YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE… Multiplication and Division Activities BUNDLE Maths Puzzles Worksheets HUGE BUNDLE Place Value CrossNumber Puzzles Area and Perimeter Activities BUNDLE   Explore more at FullShelf Resources

Speed Distance Time

(0)
Designed for a Year 6 class but suitable for Year 7 for revision, these 6 Speed, Distance and Time printable Four in a Row games (metric units) are fun alternative activities to additional textbook work on this maths topic, after pupils know the formulae D=SxT, S=D÷T and T=D÷S. ANSWER VERSIONS of all games are included. All games are in PDF format. Contains a more simple (one star) and more challenging (two star) version for each of: Distance Travelled Average Speed Time Taken In addition to featuring generally more challenging calculations, the two-star versions of each require conversion between units in some cases. Print and laminate the boards for regular use. I recommend printing boards in A3 if possible (or enlarging them to A3 on the copier) but A4 will be okay too. Pupils work as pairs against pairs or one against one to get four correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. They roll a die each time to find which column to pick a calculation from (the columns are numbered 1-6). If there are no calculations left in the column whose number they have rolled, they either skip a go or roll again (depending on the rules you have chosen). Pupils write their answers on the board with a whiteboard marker. Activities (a game, puzzles worksheets and word problem cards) for differentiated negative numbers lessons at Key Stage 2 (KS2). It was originally designed for Year 5 and Year 6 and equivalents. Includes 3 fun Hidden Word / Spot the Mistake Puzzles (and solutions), a 30-card Loop Game / Dominoes Set and 16 Word Problems Cards (8 multi-step and 8 more simple). PUZZLES An engaging alternative to worksheets, these Numeracy puzzles make ideal starter, early finisher or homework activities. There’s one on increasing and decreasing temperature (Celsius), one for simple subtraction calculations with mostly negative number answers and a more challenging puzzle featuring addition and subtraction of negative and positive integers. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a maths-related word is revealed after completing calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Students circle boxes containing errors. Then they assemble the letters from the circled boxes to reveal a maths word. There’s a further challenge question / task at the bottom of the page linked to the word. Pupils often forget or avoid checking their work so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work. LOOP CARDS / DOMINOES Fun group / whole class activity to consolidate adding and subtracting negative numbers, using phrases (‘reduce by’, ‘increase’, ‘difference between’ etc). Forms a continuous loop. WORD PROBLEM CARDS 8 Multi-Step Word Problem Cards and 8 more simple. Solutions can be printed back to back with question side for student self-checking or can be printed and made into separate cards if required. Consolidates understanding of negative numbers in the contexts of temperature (degrees Celsius), money / bank accounts and points in a sporting league. Work well as early finisher challenges. Separate pounds and dollars versions. Regular practice using these resources will help to build speed and accuracy and they are an engaging change from standard worksheets. Laminate them for children to complete with dry-wipe pens or use in dry-erase sleeves if you wish to save on laminating. Alternatively, leave them uncovered and use as worksheets with a difference. These are great to have to hand throughout the year to use as last-minute meaningful ‘fillers’. They can even be turned into a competitive game if required, with pupils racing each other to complete.   4 cards have been taken from each of the following 4 full packs: Adding and subtracting within 20 Adding and subtracting within 50 Adding and subtracting 9, 10 and 11 Adding and subtracting multiples of 10   The full packs from which these cards have been taken each contain 36 cards and answer versions of all cards. Starting at the top illustration and working their way around the card in a spiral, children write the answer to each calculation in the box, creating a running total as they go. The final answer is printed at the end of the trail, beside the illustration in the middle of the card, so they can see if they have correctly completed it. If not, children can check their work to see where they have gone wrong. Thank you for your interest in my resources. I hope they work well in your classroom.
