Macbeth Writing Frames on Ambition, Deception and Guilt for low ability

Three writing frames to help low-ability students structure exam-style response to questions based on the themes of ambition and deception. Students are provided with a very short extract and an exam-style question. I made the extracts shorter than normal to make it more accessible for the students. The writing frame starts off each paragraph for the student. There is then space for the students to use their knowledge of the play to add further analysis of each quotation. It has been designed to fit onto A4 sheets for ease of printing. For some students it may be necessary to enlarge the sheet to A3. These resources help build student confidence and is an important step for helping them structure their answers independently. Also contains guidance on thesis-style introductions. ‘A thesis-style introduction that demonstrates your understanding of the question can be a really helpful way of starting your answer. It shows that you are ‘in charge’ of your essay and that you know what you think. It can provide a strong foundation for the rest of the essay. Keep referring back to the introduction to create a coherent response.’ AQA examiner’s report 2022 Creating a thesis-style introduction is a challenge for many students but is essential in helping students to reach levels 4-6 in the mark scheme. I have produced a simple 3 point structure to help students quickly generate a thesis statement in timed exam conditions. There is an example of the 3 point structure being used and then students attempt to imitate the structure for 4 other exam-style questions.

Complete lesson analysing Fred’s character in A Christmas Carol. Differentiated starter activity. Detailed annotation of 8 key Fred quotations with 4 detailed inferences for each quotation. The annotations are animated to appear one by one so you can talk them through. Students are then given a model paragraph and asked to use their notes to write the next paragraph(s). The plenary invites students to consider the strengths and weaknesses of Dickens’ characterisation and asks students to think about Fred’s one-dimensionality.

10+ Resources to teach students methods for comparing poems from the AQA anthology. Includes ideas for discriminating comparisons by both theme and method. The model examples come from the Power and Conflict AQA anthology and include plans for… The Emigree and Kamikaze Exposure and War Photographer. Exposure and Storm on the Island Tissue and Ozymandias Remains and Bayonet Charge Prelude and Ozymandias London and My Last Duchess There is also a blank template for students to practise using the 12 point comparative method on a question comparing Ozymandias and My Last Duchess. There is also a choice over a simple 4 paragraph methods based approach or a more advanced 2 paragraph conceptual approach. There is also a diamond ranking starter activity to get students to engage with the criteria for grade 8 and 9. There is also a resource with 3 tiers of difficulty depending on how confident students are at planning their own comparisons. Tier 1: Students add the analysis of the quotations. The topic sentences and recommended quotations are already filled in for them. Tier 2: Students must pick their own 3 quotations from each poem and analyse the quotations. Tier 3: Students must pick their own topic sentences, quotations and then analsyse the quotations. The questions covered are as follows: 2021 question: Compare how poets present ideas about power and control in ‘London’ and in one other poem from ‘Power and conflict’. (30) Nov 2020 question: Compare how poets present the ways people are affected by difficult experiences in ‘Remains’ and in one other poem from ‘Power and conflict’. Now we are several years into the new syllabus, I predict they might go for a more obscure extracts. I have been through the text and come up with 6 predictions about extracts that might come up in 2024. Students read each extract and complete the planning grid for each. Ideal to use in a final revision lesson. Also includes a planning resource which offers 3 levels of differentiation to help guide students on how to structure a full length response on the following 4 themes/topics: children, materialism, ghosts, Christmas. Tier 1 difficulty (I do): Big idea, topic sentences and quotations are provided. Students add the analysis of the quotations. Tier 2 difficulty (We do): Students must choose 2 quotations to support each topic sentence and analyse the quotations. Tier 3 difficulty (You do): Students have to generate the big idea, the topic sentences, 2 quotations a paragraph and the quotation analysis.

A worksheet and PowerPoint to support the study of the character of Eva Smith in An Inspector Calls. Students read the 32 carefully selected quotations about Eva Smith and work out who said each one. They can plot the utterances into a table to enable further analysis. Also includes a worksheet examining who is responsible for her death and an essay planning sheet with and without answers. The PowerPoint then encourages students to create a revision page on Eva by explaining what the key quotations reveal. Students look at a grade 5/6 full response on Eva. Includes a high-level direct knowledge statement which I explain and regularly encourage them to keep referring back to when it comes to discussing Shakespeare’s authorial message in the play at the end of each analytical paragraph.
