A revision game to encourage students to explain the various key terms and events during 1945-1975 USA: Land of Liberty unit for the OCR Modern World A GCSE curriculum. This will also work along side any exam board for basic content as it more about getting students to recall information about certain topics to win points. This could be adapted as a whole class game / small group game and if students are unable to explain their answers, their task could be to go away and find out so that they can then come and join back in once they have gained the knowledge.

A revision overview for students to complete. It is made up of a chart which is broken down into the three eras - Medieval, Early Modern, Modern and all the various wars. There is sections for students to complete key events and then spaces for the impact on the people, the government and other impacts. On the back page there is exam guidance for Paper 2 OCR War and society for the 4 exam questions. I usually print this off as an A4 booklet. The fact that it is in eras, really helps students then pull across the themes for the significance 14 mark Question and the comparing and contrasting period 24 mark question…

This is a timeline with the historical interpretations for appeasement and the view points of the historians linked the events that they use to argue their viewpoint. It was created with my OCRA GCSE students in mind to help them with the process of understanding what events were surrounding the historians who were writing and what evidence they used to support their claims. My Year 11 this year have found it incredibly useful for learning the interpretations but also to help them revise effectively. I also believe that this would be very useful for A level students who are studying this period and need a brief historical interpretations overview. See also my Cold War historical interpretations.

A lesson which incorporates some knowledge on the government’s response to the Red Scare - as the lesson starts off with a simple bingo game! Students have to pick 3 out of the list of 7 and then have to guess by the clues if they have bingo or not! The answers are on the subsequent slides. There is then a link to a clip about the rise of McCarthy and some questions on a slide that can be printed out for students to use to make notes from. There is then a task which requires students to identify the different groups of people who did try to challenge McCarthy. The final activities involve answering some Questions using the text book and then drawing a leg and making a note of the legacy of McCarthy. A fun and easy lesson to help students understand the period where American citizens had their rights and freedoms trampled for the sake of their rights and freedoms.

This is two lessons work which charts the rise of Hitler and the Nazis to total power over Germany by 1934 and the death of President Hindenburg. There is a worksheet with questions which follows a short video linked in the ppt and then there is a consolidation exercise where students are encouraged to write paragraphs explaining their knowledge and understanding of the events. There are a number of opportunities where students are asked to evaluate their progress and understanding of these events throughout the lesson. These will work as stand alone lessons, but they do follow nicely on from my first lesson Hitler and the Nazis rise to power - this covers the concepts of democracy and dictatorship and how Germany went from one to the other. These lessons are suitable for KS3 year 9.

This is a one hour revision lesson on Imperial warfare covering the Seven years war, the Napoleonic, Boer and Crimean wars and their impacts on British society. The worksheet contains numerous tasks from making notes, to categorising. This is to enable the students to access a lot of material quickly so that they are then able to get onto the more important tasks of planning and answering GCSE style questions.

Included in this bundle are 6 essay planning sheets. There are a number of questions - each sheet has one standard A Level question. There are then the key issues that need to be addressed in order to be able to successfully answer the essay question. - This is for the student to then complete. It should be noted that these form only a basis for student's knowledge to aid in student's revision and serve to help weaker students plan and identify necessary content. However, it can still be useful as a checklist for moreable students. Included is a completed answer example of Elizabeth's last years. I hope your students find them useful.

A GCSE revision lesson based on the OCR modern world A specification. This could also be used as a consolidation lesson. The worksheet works along side the ppt, giving students opportunities to work independently or in pairs, on tasks such as matching up events with the countries, mini mindmap on Bin Laden, a True and False quiz, a note taking exercise on the more extreme actions of as-Qaeda, culminating in 9-11, the lesson finishes with a youtube clip covering the USA’s response and their war on terror. There are also some sample questions on the ppt for students to complete.

These lessons are suitable for Year 9 or KS3. A couple of lessons that track the rise of Hitler and the Nazis and their consolidation to total power over Germany by 1934. These lessons deal with issues such as democracy and dictatorship and examines the various stages that took place that enabled Hitler to take power, from the impact of the depression to the death of President Hindenburg. There are frequent opportunities for students to check and evaluate their progress. The first lesson contains a short clip - but this must be stopped and explained frequently to allow the students to understand the complexities. The second lesson also has a short clip and there is pdf of questions to support this. At the end of the lesson students can play a game of scrabble - well kind of, they have to write 3 paragraphs and use correctly various historical terms to win points

A lesson designed for the Personal rule to Restoration unit which starts with a recap of why Englishmen were falling out with Charles I. It recaps the role of the three advisors - Weston, Laud and Wentworth. The lesson then develops in to the Long Parliament with a short task where students are asked to find a list of concessions which Charles I made. There is then a task for students to find out the short term causes of the English Civil War. Including the Irish rebellion, the Grand Remonstrance, The attempted arrest of 5 members, the Militia Ordinance, the commissions of Array and the Nineteen propositions. The War and Society text book will be required for this lesson.

This follows on from 3 previous other lessons (also available), but could be a stand alone lesson. Within this lesson there are 3 documents. A ppt, a word document which has the layout of the Framlingham castle ( I suggest having this blown up to A3) and a chart comparing form and function throughout the ages - this can be used as a tick sheet for weaker students and a chance to explain and justify for more able students. The ppt has a variety of slides that can be printed out for students to work in groups - or an around the room activity. Students will need to examine the specific key physical changes to Framlingham's form under the various nobility and then add the info or picture to the A3 word document. They should then annotate the layout with the correct century, to show how the castle's form evolved over time. The final word document is to be used to show an overview of the function of the castle and again to see how this evolved over time. Weaker students could tick the castle's use ie, as security, as an impressive home, or as a charitable institution, and more able students could give examples of justification.

This is 2 lessons approx, involving siting the chosen case study of Framlingham castle for the OCR Modern World A syllabus for 2018. This lesson develops into an overview of the changes to Framlingham castle's form and function. Included is a blank timeline and a ppt with lots of slides that makes the material slightly more accessible to learners than the text book. These can be used as a research activity to your liking - group work, research, or around the room collating, depending on your particular groups. This allows for appropriate differentiation - as the resources can be adapted. The timeline charts the key four phases of the castle as well as more specific changes to the form and function and the reasons why.

This is the third lesson following the siting and overview of Framlingham Castle. This lesson tracks the history of the individuals who lived in the castle over the four phases. As there is lots of information - this has been done with the intention of trying to bring a bit of fun back to the GCSE course by them doing it in the style of Through the Keyhole! This could be done on an individual basis or as a class they could all complete a few of the personalities and then they could be photocopied. If there is time, a few students could be brave enough to do their own version of " Through the keyhole" and ask the questions..."who lived in castle like this?" A follow up task would then be for the students to put them all into chronological order.

This resource covers all of OCR A explaining the Modern world - covering Interwar and Origins of WW2, Causes of the Cold War, Cold War crises and confrontations, the end of the Cold War and Post Cold War and USA 1945-1975 The Land of Liberty? There are numerous slides with different revision activities on each, all closely linked to the OCR specification. After each topic task slide there is a following slide which has sample questions which can be used to test student’s knowledge. These are all in the style of questions which will appear on the exam. These can be printed off in a booklet format (I have done this for my own groups) so that they can have support with their revision at home. This resource is perfect for all year 11 History students, but is something that could also be used for year 10 as part of the ongoing need for constant revision for this course.

This is a series of tasks serving as an overview for the War and Society unit for the OCR Modern world A unit - Medieval to 1500, designed to help with the massive amount of content required for this course. These revision sheets cover the threat of the Vikings and Saxon’s responses, the Norman conquest and it’s impact, the break down of the Feudal system, the Anarchy and King John and the Barons, the Age of Chivalry, and the Hundred years’ war. The intention being to give a decent overview from which to start effective revision. Students can always use their class notes to add extra details to these tasks. Some of the tasks included involve completing charts, categorising and adding evidence. The sheets are broken down into the time period, type of warfare, attitude and responses and the impact on the British people. There are extra aspects to some - such as why was the Norman Conquest successful as this is covered in the exam spec. There are also some opportunities for students to answer an 8 and a 14 mark questions.

Attached is a couple of lessons work on the Boer war. Within the ppt, there is a link to a super documentary available on you tube called Scorched Earth. There is a worksheet to guide students through the programme - with various activities for students to complete. There is also a supplied answer sheet for teaching staff. The lesson will requires students to have access to the War in Society text book by Hodder education. There is a worksheet which can be printed off for students to complete regarding the impacts of the war on British society on the ppt - once they have an understanding of the background. There is also an SEN version of this on the ppt. At the end there are some exam style questions linking to the various imperial wars as recommended by OCR.

A great activity for year 9 understanding the rise of Hitler and the Nazis. This can be completed as an extension activity if the content has previously been taught. There is a link to a youtube clip on the top of the sheet and the questions follow in chronological order. The worksheet covers everything from the depression to the various elections, the burning down of the Reichstag, Night of Long knives, and the death of Hindenburg.

A lovely lesson (could easily be several) lessons for GCSE students to revise the international relations unit especially for OCR, but would work really well with AQA and Edexcel modern world syllabuses. The ppt explains the variety of tasks - Various slides should also be printed out as instructions for each table. Some of the tasks are also on the slides, but others are extra attachments such as the explain away game and the timeline cards. This is a good way to keep yr 11 engaged and proactive during those last few lessons.

As the new GCSE is largely content driven, the objective of these flash cards are for students to try to help learn, revise, test and hopefully retain some knowledge of the early part of the course. The cards ask some basic comprehension questions - with some more complicated style qs that give a good overview of the Paris Peace conference and treaties, the LON successes and failures and the causes of WW2 with Hitler's actions. The cards are to be backed - the numbers on each question card correlate to the number on the answer card. The cards can be emailed out to students for them to print and revise at home, or can be printed off and cut up as part of a revision activity in lessons. There will be more to follow as I develop them.

A lesson examining the requirements for the AQA A2 syllabus the American Dream Primary source work. The lesson briefly covers what the students need to do for each primary source. This should NOT be set as a cover lesson, it needs teacher guidance through the analysis. Students can work in pairs or threes, they are to analyse their source (on the ppt - I would print and blow these up to A3). they are to spend 5/6 mins completing what they can examining content and argument, tone and emphasis, provenance and contextual knowledge. Students are then to swap their source with another pair and continue analysing another source. Ideally all pairs should have seen all six sources. Once everyone has seen and had ago at annotating the sources, these can then be collated and a set photocopied for all students to have a mini booklet of sample answers.
