Assessing and Recording without the Exercise Book

Assessing and Recording without the Exercise Book

Children often know more about science that we think; sometimes they just donʼt have the skills to write down their ideas. I wrote this book because I have a strong belief that all children, whatever their literacy levels, should be given the opportunity to share what they know about science. Over the years, Iʼve developed a range of alternative recording methods that allow children to express their knowledge and learning. These have been tried and tested in the classroom. This book outlines these methods, gently guiding the reader through each one. I cover what each recording method looks like, the reason behind using it, some ideas on how to incorporate it into a lesson and how to use it to assess children. My hope is that this book will show teachers that there are ways to record and assess science that are fun and creative and that generate enthusiasm in the classroom. Most importantly - they donʼt involve an exercise book. By using these methods youʼll find that children, particularly those who lack the ability to get things down on paper, will demonstrate an amazing science understanding. They just needed to be given the chance to express it their way! This book was written for primary Teachers but the ideas can be used in secondary schools as well.

The Christmas Zombie Invasion!

The Christmas Zombie Invasion!

This is a highly entertaining Christmas lesson full of fun activities. Complete and ready to use. There’s nothing like zombies to capture the imagination of students! The lesson includes a fully explained activity where students build and fire simple catapults made from lolly (popsicle) sticks. This is done in the classroom (no need to go outside). You do NOT (not!) need to know how to build the catapult, the lesson carefully guides students so they can do it without help ! A story about an invasion of zombie Santas is told. Christmas is in jeopardy! The learners have to try to save Christmas by defeating the zombie horde and finding a cure to turn the zombies back into humans. All instructions are included and the lesson teaches the learners almost automatically, any of us can give this fun and imaginative lesson. How can we stop the zombie horde? How do we cure the zombies turning them back into people? Can your class save Christmas? The length of the lesson is very flexible depending on your needs. There are add and delete activities so the lesson can easily last anywhere between 0.5 hours and 1.5 hours depending on what you want. This lesson gets the learners out of their seats, keeps them happy, focused and engaged as they work in teams building and creating. There’s nothing like zombies to capture the imagination of students! It's a great lesson that teachers of any subject can use with all ages from 6 to 16. It won't go out of date (like a quiz might) so you can use it for years to come, which makes it excellent value at this price !
