Expanding and Factorising Brackets Mixed Exercise Maths Worksheet

First section simplifying simple algebraic expressions, second section expanding single brackets, third section expanding and then simplifying, and the final section factorising expressions. This is good for consolidation of the expanding and factorising brackets. nth term of a decreasing arithmetic sequence

nth term of a decreasing arithmetic sequence

A task I used with more able Year 8 students. Students are given decreasing arithmetic sequences - but most of the terms are missing. They must first determine the missing terms, and then work out the nth term. The gaps that indicate missing terms are quite small, sorry, so you may want to get students to copy out the sequences into their books. You get 2 copies of the activity on one sheet of A4. Solutions are provided - the completed sequences and their nth terms are in separate documents.

Reasoning problem, working systematically - Find all possibilities for Homer's doughnuts

Reasoning problem, working systematically - Find all possibilities for Homer's doughnuts

A fantastic reasoning activity that helps children improve their problem solving and ability to work systematically. The problem starts with 3 objects and moves on to four. There is also an opportunity for more able children to make predictions for 5 and 6 objects and then test their theories. Very able children may make connections such as once you find all the possibilities for one starting object, you can multiply this by the total number of objects for the number of possibilities altogether. Sequences investigation (using square and hexagonal tile patterns)

Sequences investigation (using square and hexagonal tile patterns)

There are 2 simple sequence investigations, one using square tiles and one using hexagonal tiles. Each investigation has an A4 worksheet to set out the problem and a PowerPoint presentation to go through the solution. There are also 2 extension investigations that involve square and triangular numbers. The method of using simultaneous equations to find a quadratic formula is shown in the accompanying Powerpoint along with a more visual approach. These investigations can also be used as examples after which you may ask students to create their own patterns with square/hexagonal tiles and find solutions to their own questions. To help students do this there is a sheet of other hexagonal tile sequences to give them some ideas.

Sequences

Sequences

Exploring sequences through a series of big problems that encourage students to find multiple methods. There are additional questions to promote deeper thought and understanding around a new method or technique. We begin at finding the nth term and conclude with ‘is a term part of a sequence?’. Sequences Search - using the nth term (Substitution)

Sequences Search - using the nth term (Substitution)

This is similar to a resource already on TES that I really like (https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/gcse-maths-sequences-search-worksheet-6158880) but I wanted an activity that required more substitution into nth terms rather than pattern-spotting, so this is what I came up with. Students have to find the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 10th, 50th and 100th terms of sequences using the given nth terms. They cross off all of their answers in the grid above. For ease of marking, there will be 10 numbers left over in the grid after the activity is completed. Students should add these together, and if they’ve made no mistakes, they’ll get a total of 1000. Full solutions are still provided however!

Position in a sequence using the nth term

Position in a sequence using the nth term

Codebreaker activity, deciding whether a number is in a sequence or not. Pupils chose yes or no then rearrange the letters to give a capital city, The other side is a worksheet where pupils are given the nth term of a sequence and have to either find the term given the term number or vice versa. 3 sequences progressively harder, (positive/negative/quadratic). Easily adaptable and the answers are given.

Quadratic Sequences 2 (Loop Cards)

Quadratic Sequences 2 (Loop Cards)

I love to start one-to-one tutorials/interventions with a loop card activity. They are also excellent when working with small groups or as a starter or plenary for a whole class. To see all the available loop-card topics click 👉 tes.com/…/More Loop Cards….
This particular set of cards allows students to practise finding the nth term formulae for quadratic sequences. Note that the questions have been carefully selected so that they provide good coverage of this sub-topic and so that the opportunities for students to guess answers are minimised.
Colour coding: All my loop cards are colour-coded to indicate the approximate level of the questions: KS2 – red and orange KS3/GCSE Foundation – orange and green GCSE Higher – green, blue and purple
Further information: In this download there are four sets of similar cards and a student chooses one of the sets and sorts them into order by answering the questions. Then they try to do it faster using a different set, which has the same questions, but a different sort order 😃 My favourite use of loop cards is for two students to have different versions of the cards and race each other. They then check their answers, shuffle, swap packs and race again (quickest overall time wins). More instructions are included in the download. Cut out card size is approx. 65 x 90 mm.
👍If you like this resource, then please rate it and/or leave a comment💬.
