Problem Solving This unit contains problem solving tasks to consolidate and challenge pupils’ reasoning, investigative and problem solving skills. Problems involving geometry, statistics, number, money, fractions and decimals are included. The resource includes 25 worksheets/activities for week 12 of the summer term linked to the above areas with an emphasis on the mastery approach to learning advocated by the White Rose scheme. The resources encourage pupils to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. The pack could also be used for revision, assessment, extra practice, extension and for homework. Straight Line Graphs

A Homework that I gave to my Year 8 Basic plotting of simple lines (no tables) and answering questions about those lines - where do they cross, which ones are parallel etc.

Plotting straight line graphs (implicit equations)

Students are provided with structure to facilitate plotting straight line graphs of implicit equations. The worksheet is split into two sections, progressing in difficulty, and each has an extension section. For very able students a further extension could be to find the points of intersection without having to plot the lines, although it is generally beneficial for their understanding to have a visual representation available as well. Answers are provided, including the plotted straight lines. The focus of this lesson could be any of the following: – Plotting straight line graphs; – Rearranging equations; – Simultaneous equations; – Intersection of straight lines; – What it means to ‘satisfy’ an equation; – Implicit vs explicit equations. As you can see, many concepts are touched upon here, and you will need to decide which angle you are approaching this activity from to ensure that the lesson is coherent. Also included is a basic starter to give practise rearranging to change the subject of an equation.

This worksheet includes 6 exercises on straight line graphs. It will be a good transition between coordinates and plotting points and introduction to straight line graphs. In some exercises, the equation is given to complete the table and then plot the points to draw the straight line graph. In other exercises, the graph is given to find the coordinates of different points and the equation that relates them. The last exercise is to find the midpoint of a line, knowing two points. Graphing Linear Equations Cut n Paste Activity (Linear Relationships)
