Linear graphs match up activity

Linear graphs match up activity

A match up activity for KS3 Mathematics. Students need to match up simple linear graphs with their equations, possible co-ordinates and tables of values. Some of the graphs and tables are left blank for students to fill in themselves. One of the graphs requires students to make up their own equation for a straight line and draw it. Examples of equations include; y=3, y=-x and y=3x+2. Materials included: 5 linear graphs and 3 blank axis, 8 tables of values with some missing values, 7 equations and 1 blank equation, 7 possible co-ordinates and 1 blank co-ordinate. There is also a copy of the graphs matched with their equations to provide some answers if needed.

Parabolic Curve Graphing Activity

Parabolic Curve Graphing Activity

This print and go activity requires students to find and graph ordered pairs on a coordinate plane graph. Ordered pairs include integers ranging from 12 to -12 and includes all 4 quadrants. Students use a ruler or straight edge to connect points in order to create this fun parabolic curve using all straight lines. Such a cool idea to explore!

Year 4 Co-Ordinates (4 Lessons)

Year 4 Co-Ordinates (4 Lessons)

A 4 lesson unit covering Co-Ordinates following the ‘Small Steps’ of the new White Rose scheme of learning (from 2017). I used these lessons as an introduction to co-ordinates as the children had never come across them before. I used this lesson to introduce the concept of co-ordinates to my not so confident Mathematicians and clearly identify my Greater Depth children. Based on Singapore Maths (Maths No Problem - the only book recommended by the DfE) All maths lessons at my school follow this structure: Fluency recap - something they have done before, get them thinking. Useful vocabulary slide - children to add to the slide as you go through the topic/unit. The teaching aspect of the lesson. Identifying/creating Steps 2 Success (S2S) Children go away and complete their activity. There is one activity for all children. The first few questions (1-3) are aimed at ARE. The questions get harder as they progress the final questions are the ones where you can identify your Greater Depth children as those questions require reasoning and explanations to the questions. The differentiation within the lesson is the equipment provided and the support given to the children. Dong Nao Ting (an independent plenary the children complete in silence at the end of the lesson. Translates to ‘Use Your Head’ my children love it!). A plenary that all children complete in their books. The question is taken from the mastery document. This will again clearly identify your GD children. Some children wont be able to answer the question but they can have an attempt at it. I have taught this lesson in Year 4 but could easily be adapted for UKS2. Included within this resource is: lesson presentation in the format of Smart Notebook for all four lessons, starter activities for 2 lessons independent activities (and answers) for all 4 lessons, and a Dong Nao Ting for all four lessons. Any questions, please ask :)

Class Cluedo Maths

Class Cluedo Maths

This converts the classic game Cluedo into three maths lessons. The aim for the children is to find out the location, weapon and the murderer by solving clues the murderer has left. I’ve always taught it as the children are in teams of 3 but it could be bigger or smaller teams. The font on the powerpoint is Baskerville Old Face which isn’t supported on the TES preview. The powerpoint is designed for a Year 6 class. However, it can be adapted to any age range, including secondary school, as everything within it is editable. The clues are meant to be multiple step maths questions and have been left blank for your use. It includes: The Cluedo Powerpoint The clues template on word The clues extention template on word A set of Cluedo cards on publisher A nice touch may be to get some deerstalker hats so the children can answer as the detective.

Plotting straight line graphs (implicit equations)

Plotting straight line graphs (implicit equations)

Students are provided with structure to facilitate plotting straight line graphs of implicit equations. The worksheet is split into two sections, progressing in difficulty, and each has an extension section. For very able students a further extension could be to find the points of intersection without having to plot the lines, although it is generally beneficial for their understanding to have a visual representation available as well. Answers are provided, including the plotted straight lines. The focus of this lesson could be any of the following: – Plotting straight line graphs; – Rearranging equations; – Simultaneous equations; – Intersection of straight lines; – What it means to ‘satisfy’ an equation; – Implicit vs explicit equations. As you can see, many concepts are touched upon here, and you will need to decide which angle you are approaching this activity from to ensure that the lesson is coherent. Also included is a basic starter to give practise rearranging to change the subject of an equation.

Introduction exercises to straight line graphs. Includes Answer Key.

Introduction exercises to straight line graphs. Includes Answer Key.

This worksheet includes 6 exercises on straight line graphs. It will be a good transition between coordinates and plotting points and introduction to straight line graphs. In some exercises, the equation is given to complete the table and then plot the points to draw the straight line graph. In other exercises, the graph is given to find the coordinates of different points and the equation that relates them. The last exercise is to find the midpoint of a line, knowing two points. The document includes the answer. Please rate so I can improve as I go on!
