Exploring Abbey Road

Exploring Abbey Road

This is a worksheet that helps to guide pupils through the Google resource Inside Abbey Road (https://insideabbeyroad.withgoogle.com/). The website is a virtual tour around the iconic Abbey Road studios in London, UK. The tour is interactive and the students can take this at their own pace. There are lots of items for the students to click on and explore to learn more. This activity is a great introduction to recording studios, the equipment they contain and what they are used for. The worksheet I have created helps to guide pupils through the tour making sure they do not miss out any of the important bits! The worksheet features questions that require the pupil to use the tour to conduct their own research to find the answers to. The lesson requires PCs or iPads in order to view the tour whilst completing the worksheet. This is suitable to as a cover lesson.

Wallace And Gromit: Say Cheese! Revision/Cover Lesson

Wallace And Gromit: Say Cheese! Revision/Cover Lesson

This is a one hour lesson designed as a revision task for KS3 students. It includes a powerpoint, audio examples, a starter, differentiated objectives and worksheets for students to complete. The content covers reading sheet music, and basic revision on the notes of the treble clef and basic rhythm symbols. There are extension tasks that cover ledger lines, dotted notes, rests and tied notes in more detail for more able students. The secondary task can be either a performance (solo or duet) task, or a sequencing/composition tasks intended for use of software such as Garageband. The theme tune for Wallace and Gromit is split into a melody and harmony line to input or play at the learner’s level. This is very good for independent learning, but I am also confident in using it as a cover lesson too. The plenary includes a thumbs up/down activity and saying “cheese” for the differentiated selfie-obsessed generation.

Awesome Rhythm: Everything is Awesome Scheme of Work and Resources

Awesome Rhythm: Everything is Awesome Scheme of Work and Resources

Are you sick of tee-ta-tea-tea-ing your way around rhythm? Do KS3 students STILL NOT UNDERSTAND rhythm symbols? Need to bridge the gap between practical and music technology? This scheme of work is for you. I’ve designed a scheme of work for a KS3 class who have been introduced to the names of rhythm symbols and the idea that they have duration, but need some revision and a modern approach to learning it. This scheme of work lasts a half term (five lessons minimum) and covers revision of rhythm symbols (Semibreve, Minim, Crotchet, Quaver, Rests, Ties and Dots) in a fun way relating to lego. It also covers an introduction into music technology (I have used Garageband but this can be easily tranferred to Cubase or Sibelius etc), texture, and the idea of melody, counter melody and harmony. It can be a fun independent learning project or used for ensemble performances too. The scheme of work ends with a simple assessment with a grid for teachers to comment on expected progress and a feedback form. There is mastery style tick sheet also. There are three extension tasks attached to lessons 2, 3 and 4. Note: I have actually done lesson one with physical lego bricks and it has gone down a treat! No more issues there! I have embedded audio files into the powerpoint but we all know how that can go so I’ve attached that here for reentering too. There is also a copy of every Garageband file for displaying on the board or editing how you like.

GCSE Edexcel Composition Coursework Booklet Template

GCSE Edexcel Composition Coursework Booklet Template

This booklet is designed for students (and let’s face it SLT/OFSTED) to track their progress in working towards their composition coursework. It includes pages on target grade achievement, a working check list, a half-way through the project reflection and marking space, and an end of project assessment. It can be adapted for any area of study and includes a space for you to customise key points students need to focus on. My students enjoy having all their work in one place, and my own observers comment that it is “easy” to observe their progress and reflection in a subject their not familiar with. *Please note the grade boundaries supplied are based off of the 2017 grade boundaries which of course you can edit year to year. **The check list is my own interpretation of the specification and is not verified by Edexcel.

Dance Music Mash Up KS3 Keyboard Task - Shape of You and many more.

Dance Music Mash Up KS3 Keyboard Task - Shape of You and many more.

Suitable for a pairs task on keyboard in a KS3 Music Classroom. I am currently using music technology with Year 8 music classes to create a piece of club dance music from the ‘breaks’ or ‘hooks’ on the sheet. The have all been transposed into Am so will flow nicely into each other - students could also compose their own chord sequence in Am that these hooks will work with. The sheet contains 2-4 bars of the main hooks from the following songs: 7 Nation Army - White Stripes Shape of You - Ed Sheeran Wake Me Up - Avicii Insomnia - Faithless Lady Gaga - Poker Face King - Years and Years

GCSE Music 9-1 Editable MusicTABOO Cards

GCSE Music 9-1 Editable MusicTABOO Cards

Create an example Taboo-style game for GCSE students based on one of the SetWorks and then give them the template to create their own. Colour coded using the same analysis colour scheme used in all the resources I have developed. Add a bonus reward for the students who can give examples related to the word on their card. Adapt for KS3 or even KS5. Offered here as an editable Word Document. Print double-sided on thin card flipped on the long edge. NB. It looks a little strange in the preview/info but I know the file is fine in Word 2016 and so I’d be interested to hear from anyone who tries downloading whether it works successfully. I hope you like it!

Creating an EDM track online

Creating an EDM track online

This is a comprehensive 6 week course for Key Stage 3 in which they will: Recognise and describe EDM (Electronic Dance Music) Use an online DAW (Soundtrap) to create a track of music (sequencing loops) Use MIDI a device correctly Upload their track online to share it with others in their year for constructive comments The extensive PowerPoint covers every aspect of these aims and guides the class through each required stage. Having developed and run this course a couple of times I can honestly say that students have really connected with and enjoyed these 6 lessons. It has served me particularly well during the final term when the focus and attention of some students in KS3 is lacking…! Perfect for the end of term. If you do not have access to MIDI devices you can still run the course! You can use the keyboard provided with Soundtrap. Everything has been embedded into the PowerPoint (videos and mp3). However, in case any links are broken I have included all required videos and mp3s.
