Forming the early atmosphere

Forming the early atmosphere

An engaging lesson presentation (32 slides) and accompanying worksheet that shows students how the early atmosphere of the Earth was formed and how that has changed to todays mixture. The lesson begins by a mathematical competition to get the students to recognise the percentages of the different gases in the current atmosphere. They are also challenged to draw a pie chart to show these figures. Assistance is given to show them how to work out the size of each segment before they use this knowledge to complete the chart. Moving forwards, students work together with the teacher to explain how volcanic activity could have led to the high levels of carbon dioxide and water vapour and then they are challenged to come up with viable suggestions for how the % of carbon dioxide has decreased whilst the % of oxygen has increased. There are progress checks throughout the lesson so that students can assess their understanding. This lesson has been designed for GCSE students but is suitable for a KS3 student who is studying the Earth's atmosphere.
