New Term: Motivational Assembly - Who do YOU think you are?

New Term: Motivational Assembly - Who do YOU think you are?

Are you returning to a new role and need a hard hitting, relevant and motivating speech to really grab your new year group? Or just need something inspiring to use at short notice? This assembly is perfect for any Secondary age group up to and including Sixth Formers. It draws on a speech by Jay Shetty which is both relevant and appealing to the modern student. This assembly asks students to engage with who they really are, and who they want to be post education and nurtures the concept that their goals will all be different and that’s perfectly ok. This is a wholly inclusive and encouraging assembly and will get your students off to a focused start to their year.

Assembly: Signs and Direction (FAITH SCHOOL)

Assembly: Signs and Direction (FAITH SCHOOL)

Assembly: Signs and Direction The PowerPoint is simple so it easy to follow. I’ve signposted the relevant slides on the Script. I usually use this around Lent. Although I often use this theme with KS3/4 as it is based around road signs and being able to accurately read them, so I imagine it would be relevant to KS5 too. The students are asked to reflect on: danger signs, u-turns, give-way, etc. There are gospel references and prayers interwoven.

Lesson: Introduction to Human Rights

****Introduction to Human Rights (PSHE/Citizenship) I use this with Key Stage 3 as part of their PSHE/Citizenhip carousel. They start by considering their own HR’s. Then we consider a set of potential ‘school rules’. They then consider some HR terminology and decision making. They are given some real world implications and discuss: access to education etc Very self-explanatory. There are notes for delivery in the Notes section of the PowerPoint.

Full 30 minute playscript of 'Pippa the Pirate Fights Plastic'

Full 30 minute playscript of 'Pippa the Pirate Fights Plastic'

This is a 30 minute play based on a pirate who becomes famous for fighting plastic pollution. I wrote and produced this play with lower and upper key stage 2 children, who managed the lines and stage directions well. I have adapted the play with current themes and there’s a host of characters who explain how plastic effects their lives in terms which can be understood from foundation stage. There are other themes including friendship and ‘being kind’ as well as a catchy recycle song. I give permission for character genders to be changed to suit your cast.

Minesweeper Plenary end of lesson game

Minesweeper Plenary end of lesson game

End your lessons with a bang ! Use this game as a plenary activity. This can be used for any subject and any year. E.g. MFL – translation of vocabulary Maths – answers to sums. History – dates, facts I personally have used it for pupils to translate vocabulary covered in a topic, scaffolding questions, starting with single words and then building up to more complex sentences. How to run the activity: Split the class into two groups or more. Teacher asks a question to each group. Teacher selects by hands up (or miniwhiteboards, or team discussion). Teacher selects a pupil to give the answer. If the answer is correct – pupil can choose a mine. If there’s a coin under the bomb - one point for your team If there’s an explosion under the bomb - lose one point If there’s a super bomb - the rubber duck of the evil clown - lose 2 points. The team with the most points wins!

Growth Mindset presentation (Enrichment)

Growth Mindset presentation (Enrichment)

Growth Mindset Enrichment presentation This presentation has 56 slides and contains 14 videos, which are all embedded (EXCEPT THE VIDEO THAT EMBEDS ON SLIDE 55 AS IT MADE THE FILE TOO LARGE, EVEN AFTER COMPRESSING, SO THIS VIDEO HAS BEEN INCLUDED AS A SEPARATE FILE FOR YOU TO RE-EMBED) into the presentation and play full-screen automatically. AIMS Understand what a growth mindset is Understand the plasticity of the brain Encourage students to take ownership of their learning Develop R & I (Resourcefulness and Initiative) Understand and develop grit Push yourself beyond comfort zone to take on new challenges Learn to not fear mistakes, learn from them (Growth Mindset) This power point is suitable for delivery as part of a whole school CPD, department CPD, or, as part of enrichment week, delivered to a whole year group. The presentation lasts between 1 ½ -2 hours, depending on how familiar you are with the Growth Mindset and how much you elaborate on each slide. The presentation contains a section where the students are asked to draw a self-portrait using their current technique, then again under the expert tuition of a YouTube artist, so they can see the instant impact better techniques have. You can see me going over the PowerPoint on my YouTube channel “gcsephysicsexplained”: [Link][https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMapEUiWYrs&t=24s&list=PLjs3KMU7zKeh6TQlEA7csA9knbtiCCAcH&index=3] I follow up the presentation by giving a questionnaire to the students (attached as a download). The presentation gets great feedback, mostly saying how inspired the students feel to take responsibility for their own learning, and how they wish someone had told them about the growth mindset and the plasticity of the brain earlier. Kind regards Matthew Obee

This assembly was to encourage year 10 to 11 who were feeling lethargic and just felt they were doing good enough. In this assembly, I show just how hard students in other parts of the world are working to get into a UK university. It had a very strong impact on my students and really helped them to understand why everyone wants them to work hard for their grades.
