Introduction to Literary Lenses Using Cinderella

Introduction to Literary Lenses Using Cinderella

Lesson and materials designed for introducing students to different critical ways of reading a text. Introduces students to a range of critical lenses, and separates them into small groups. The overall aim being to allow students to apply these lenses whilst studying any work of literature. Q5 bridges to a specific Theory of Knowledge moment. Instructions Watch the video of Cinderella attached. Having watched the video, read the version of Cinderella attached, by the Brothers Grimm. Having done so, choose one of the literary lens documents to work on with a partner. Apply what you can in terms of knowledge and understanding to the short story. Share your findings with the class. What did using your literary lens reveal about Cinderella as a text? Is there a lens that is most appropriate for analysing the story? If so, what? Why? To what extent can we truly understand a text through solely one perspective? How can we reapply what we have learned about literary lenses with Cinderella to text…

Authorial and narratorial reliability: The Sorrow of War (Bao Ninh)

Authorial and narratorial reliability: The Sorrow of War (Bao Ninh)

This grid is intended to encourage sixth-formers studying the novel “The Sorrow of War” to consider the reliability of both its author (Bao Ninh) and protagonist (Kien), as well as areas where the two intersect. This is also a chance to develop their abilities in terms of supporting their ideas with evidence from the text. Aimed at MA-HA students. Examples could be filled in by the teacher (maybe one per box) along with possible sentence stems for explanation to support lower-ability students. The resource could also be adapted for use with any other text that has an unreliable narrator and/or author.

Identify and evaluate knowledge claims

Identify and evaluate knowledge claims

This resource is great for KS4/KS5 Critical Thinking, Global Perspectives, TOK, or any similar courses. Students firstly have to identify knowledge claims on the sheet, as well as the grammatical particle that allows them to do so. They are then asked to assess how far they believe certain knowledge claims to be true. All of these activities could be done in groups or alone. The final statement on the sheet could be detached from the rest and used as a plenary activity, or as extension.

Drama Achievement Reports

Drama Achievement Reports

Simple reports which allow teachers to record progress in drama for students aged 3 - 13 years. Each report covers a range of personal, social and performance skills for children to achieve and these are broken down into four key skills areas in which children learn to co-operate, create, perform and reflect. Markers allow teachers to chart an individual student’s progress through a full term or semester and each report provides space for comments and aims for that child. Not accredited in any way but based on 30 years of drama teaching experience. A great way to begin to quantify the developmental, social and creative benefits of drama. If you have found this resource useful please leave a positive review. Thanks!

HPQ and EPQ Reliable Resources Compendium

HPQ and EPQ Reliable Resources Compendium

If you are taking over an HPQ or EPQ programme and you need to give students reliable and challenging research starting points, then I have put this list together. This is a list of every useful resource that I have found when involved with assisting and leading independent research projects in KS4 and KS5 for the last four years. This list is mostly free resources (only two subscription resources are mentioned and described) which are reliable and have been easily understood by my students. There are most general resources to get students started (the ones who aren’t sure which topic to pick) and then more subject specific resources. Subjects listed in this document are: Art and Photography, Education, English Language, Health, Politics and Science. I have also included the best resources I have found which explain Harvard and Oxford (numerical) referencing and how to synthesise information. I have also included some tips on how to conduct advanced searching and how to use Boolean operators. This document aims to save teachers and students time and provide access to reliable information and to guide everyone to the best resources out there on the Internet.

Libya closed its border with Tunisia, making trade impossible. Tourists were hurt by falling lava in Hawaii. Others drowned when their tour boat capsized in Missouri. Estrangement: 30 Years to 30 Days: Seeds to Estrangement through Divorce

Estrangement: 30 Years to 30 Days: Seeds to Estrangement through Divorce

Approximately 90% of Estrangements from children are caused by spouses during a divorce. It has sadly become commonplace and a social issue pushed under the rug. 30 YEARS to 30 DAYS is a journey that echoes many divorces. A story of decay borne from family dysfunctions. Children estranged at the hand of the opposing parent. And of entrenched, often biased legal systems. These scenarios are not uncommon. But this book is uncommonly candid. Follow the twists of one woman’s unexpected fate. You will empathize with human frailties. Be at odds with morality issues. Become appalled at choices and amazed at heart wrenching decisions. Then wonder how a simple divorce can turn so bizarre. Reflective lessons abound should you face a similar quest. A MUST READ for every upcoming divorcee AND their adult children.
