A Level; case study of a rainforest - impacts of management on water and carbon cycles

Firstly students are introduced to shifting cultivation, as a sustainable way for tribes to live in the rainforest. Students are then asked to use the information provided to undertake comprehension activities on 3 schemes; reforestation, conservation and improvements in agriculture in the Amazon. there is also a youtube video link to accompany the conservation scheme. Students are provided with note taking sheets and should ensure their notes focus on the impacts of the 3 schemes on the carbon and water cycles. To finish students evaluate the 3 schemes before reaching a conclusion as to which is the most effective. This is part of a series of lessons and is available as a bundle.

A Level; case study of a rainforest - human factors affecting water and carbon cycles

To start students will be asked to recall the water and carbon cycles in the rainforest. They will then be asked to interpret graphs showing the rate of deforestation and the reasons for deforestation. Next are a series of photos which can be used to promote discussion about the reasons for deforestation. Students will then need to draw diagrams and take notes on the effects of human activity in the water and carbon cycles. Finally, they will be asked to evaluate whether the impact on the carbon or water cycles is greatest. More able students should be encouraged to bring in the idea of longer and shorter term impacts. Students will then be introduced to the impact of geology, relief and temperature on the water cycle and are required to explain these in relation to maps and diagrams. Students will be asked to identify the impact of an individual tree on the water cycle in the rainforest. This lesson will start by asking the students to recall the stores and flows in the carbon cycle. They will then be shown diagrams of the carbon cycle for the rainforest, tundra/taiga and deciduous forests. They will compare these and suggest reasons for the differences, before drawing their own carbon cycle to scale. Developing Global Thinkers An IB PYP Inquiry into Flags of the World

Global Thinkers are internationally minded. They are knowledgeable about the world that they live in. They ask questions about the world. They are knowledgeable about different cultures and their traditions.. They are open-minded to the differences in our world. This inquiry based activity was designed for 3rd-6th grades to learn about the world through their flags, using the IB PYP Learner Profile and Key Concepts as the focus of thinking. USA &UK spelling. The activity takes the form of a Global Passport. The pages can be mixed and matched and created into a booklet. Easy to differentiate. As the flags are introduced to the children, they will complete the pages of the passport, developing their research skills and knowledge of the countries in question. This can be completed over the course of the school year as flags are introduced, as a collaborative group/partner activity within another unit of inquiry, independent homework assignment or a geography and mapping activity. Draw arrows as to where what continent is each country in (continent and country identification)

Worksheet with several countries listed, the task is to draw arrows from each country as to what continent they are on, atlases can be very useful and help develop map reading/ atlas skills. Extension to the task is to work out whether if you were visiting the country if you were to drive/take a plane/ or a boat there, getting the children to think about travel, would you drive to Australia for example? This worksheet can be used as a base and edited as to how you like. I used this after the easter holidays are the countries listed were places the class teddies had visited over the holidays.
