Children will develop the idea of a circle representing a value (e.g. 100%, 1, 50 etc) and that the segments of that circle will have a specific value depending on their size. This lesson is an essential first step before attempting to answer questions about, or construct, pie charts. The challenge activity tasks the children with drawing in lines when given certain values - a basic introduction to constructing pie charts. Day 2 involves the children answering questions about a variety of different pie charts using the skills developed in previous session. The children will calculate values, fractions and percentages as well as use estimation to find answers. The challenge activity tasks the children to answer deeper thinking multi-step problems about pie charts. Day 3 involves the children constructing pie charts using given data using skills already developed in previous sessions. They will calculate values of segments and then use these to construct an accurate pie chart and then formulate questions about their pie chart. The challenge activity involves the children constructing more complex pie charts and combining data into one pie chart. ALSO INCLUDED: a bonus (optional) assessment opportunity. Use the investigation template to collect data and construct a pie chart to represent the data. Objectives covered: Interpret and construct pie charts and line graphs and use these to solve problems This three day pack can be purchased on a lesson by lesson basis if preferred.
