REMEMBERING VE DAY - LESSON - WAS DRESDEN JUSTIFIED OR A WAR CRIME?

This lesson has been created to recognise VE Day, and to help students look at source materials to reach a value judgment. It is suitable for most ages but particularly useful for either key stage 2 or 3. It starts with information about VE day and the background to the war in the air with clips; images and statistics. It then presents the students with a wide range of source material which they have to categorise by making inferences and tabulating information. The main task is a piece of writing in the form of a newspaper report where students are judged on how effectively they communicate the conclusions they have drawn from the sources. The lesson ends with a class discussion which can be differentiated. This is an appropriate lesson for VE Day, and takes about 1 hour to complete all activities.

It contains a power point and resources which cover lessons 16-20 of unit 1C AQA A level, and should be used in conjunction with the AQA approved text book. It also contains resources to support the power point. It can also be used for Tudor units on other examination boards. This will take approximately 5 hours to teach.

This lesson covers the case study for key topic 1 for the new EDEXCEL GCSE History breadth study Migrants in Britain. It looks at the city of York under the Vikings. This contain all of the knowledge that students need for the exam; a practice causation question, and opportunities for discussion and evaluation throughout. This case study should be taught at the end of key topic 1 - Migration in Medieval England. If all activities are covered the duration of the lesson will be 2 hours. Suitable for all ability groups. Good for transition time, Useful for corridor display too - my students try to work out the answers while they are waiting to come into the lesson There are 4 challenges: Odd one out Heads and Tails Who am I? Which era? The display is colourful and can be changed keeping the same lettering. The challenges span a range of historical events/people/periods etc and can be recreated many times.
